Red Raiders girls soccer off to good start
Given the weather conditions, “celebrating” might be a stretch but the Red Raiders’ girls soccer team was pleased with its own tournament win and overall start to the season. Huntley made it fourwins in the first five matches April 1.
“Things are shaping up well,” HHS coach Matt Lewandowski said. “We have work to do yet, but I’m really happy with our progress so far.”
Huntley’s offense has chalked up 26 goals in the first five matches as they headed to Fox Valley Conference play. A 5-0 win over Taft secured the Huntley tournament crown.
Senior forward Grace Helzer is the top threat on offense so far with seven goals and four assists.
Senior forward Chloe Pfaff has chalked up five goals and three assists while sophomore forward Madison Cummings, scored three times; senior forward Morgan McCaughn, three goals; junior midfielder Gabi Farraj had two goals.
A. Vanni leads a group of goal keepers with 13 saves and junior Maddie Lackovic notched nine saves.
Lewandowski was excited about the team’s prospects as 2023 season dawned. Its opener was a 5-0 win over Marian Central.
“There is an air of excitement and curiosity at practice,” the coach said in pre-season. “We have a mix of ages this season, which will be new for us because we’ve been very senior heavy in the past. We also have an experienced core returning from last season that is ready to compete and lead the younger mix that we have. We will definitely
have our ups and downs but ultimately this should be a fun team to watch and tough to play against. As always, we are looking to compete within the FVC and use those games to prepare for the playoffs and compete for a regional title.”
Also players to watch for are sophomore midfielder Sophia Bator and freshman forward Maizie Nickle.
