HHS tennis squad gears up for FVC
HUNTLEY — Huntley’s Ben Hein and tennis have been a combo for years now and the Red Raiders’ senior would like nothing better than to end his prep career with a bang.
“I play tennis year-round,” Hein said. “I’m excited for the season and want to help the young guys on the team. We have a great future.”
Hein and No. 1 doubles partner Matt Grubbs qualified for the Class 2A State Tennis Meet last season. This season he is teamed with senior Jon Stec in the doubles lineup. They won their Fox Valley Conference opener against Crystal Lake Central.
“Hein is a great leader and a sectional doubles champion,” HHS head coach Barry Wells said. “Hein will be back at No. 1 doubles and I think he will have very strong year.”
The Red Raiders welcome a new top singles player, freshman Will Geske. Geske has recorded three early season wins.
“Geske is a talented freshman and will be one of the strongest players in the area at No. 1 singles,” Wells said.
Huntley is 2-2 in the early going with a close 4-3 win at CLC. HHS won three of four doubles matches to secure the win. Eashan Cherukari and Ishagn Trivedi won a three-set battle while Ryan Kruk and Colin Stanley won in straight sets. The Red Raiders also won with a shutout over Oswego East.
Wells’ team figures to be a powerhouse in the FVC again, where the Red Raiders ended third in the regular season a year ago.
HHS grad at MCC
Huntley High School alum Andrew Burkey is a sophomore team member of the McHenry County College tennis team. Burkey has been named team captain.
“I’m very proud of Burkey for continuing to play tennis in college,” Wells said. “He played singles only two times in high school so it was an adjustment for him to play singles. He has worked hard and has developed into an all-around tennis player.”
