Red Raiders regain FVC momentum; coach reaches 400th
HUNTLEY — Huntley’s baseball squad made some major strides in a three-day stretch.
The Red Raiders improved to 10-1 on the season, gained two Fox Valley Conference victories and a milestone win for their head coach Andy Jakubowski. HHS improved to 3-1 FVC as it downed McHenry 13-6, Crystal Lake Central 4-3 in eight innings and Prairie Ridge 15-3 April 12.
The final win of the trio secured the 400th win in 600 games at Huntley for Jakubowski. He moved up Jacobs.
In a pre-season interview, Jakobowski said it has been great to many players go on to college ball.
He said there is mutual respect among FVC coaches.
“The FVC is great preparation for the playoffs,” Jakubowski said.
A tweak in the offense helped Huntley regain its momentum.
“I wanted us to stay in the middle instead of the pull side,” the coach said. “We did a better job of staying in the middle and staying back a little bit.”
It showed on a windy Wednesday at PR. HHS gained 17 hits with 11 for extra bases. A 9-1 start to the game propelled by home runs by Brayden Bakes (first of two) also from Ryan Bakes and Ryan Dabe.
Huntley starter Parker Schuring had a solid outing. “He gutted it out,” Jakubowski said. “He did it with a lot of mental toughness because he had been a little sick, and he had to use his fastballs only and to only allow three runs in the wind was pretty good.”
Other factors in the uptick included big brother duos of the Bakes and the Putty brothers.
In the 4-3 win over CLC in eight innings, senior AJ Putty scored the winning run on a double by brother and classmate Dillon. A throwing error and a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Dabe helped in the eighth.
“We knew we had to score one run any way we could,” AJ Putty said. “(Their pitcher) is a crafty left-handed pitcher and he usually starts me with a fastball.”
“It feels good to get the conference win,” AJ Putty said.
Another key factor in the win over the Tigers as senior Derek Huber. He shut down CLC for four total innings.
Jakubowski praised the Puttys and Huber’s efforts in the clutch.
“AJ did a good job to get the ball in play and Dillon had a good two-strike approach,” the coach said. “Huber was great in relief. We just wanted to find a way.”
