Singles leader Geske off to good start
HUNTLEY — Huntley freshman Will Geske has left a strong impression he will be a force in Fox Valley Conference tennis’ top singles spot.
Geske He has posted a 14-1 overall record, 6-0 in the FVC and just one win went to three sets. Geske earned five victories over conference opponents in a two-week span, including one three-set triumph.
“Geske has had an excellent start to the season,” HHS coach Barry Wells said. “Playing No. 1 singles as a freshman is hard to handle, but he has a lot of experience outside of high school so I was not surprised by his success so far. He has a big game and he is learning how to play different styles of players and uses his weapons on the court.”
Geske commented on his season after his latest win, 6-3, 6-1, over Hampshire April 24. “I’m enjoying the season and learned how to play as a team,” Geske said.
HHS won 5-2 over the Whip-Purs for an even 3-3 league mark and 5-5 overall.
Geske started playing tennis at age 5 and has worked with tennis skills specialists at Naperville Tennis Club.
“I’m really working hard on improving my serving,” he said. “I have clocked a 90 MPH. I would like to be the No. 1 seed at the FVC singles division tournament.”
Geske prepped for his role as a Red Raider with a March USTA tournament in Jacksonville, Florida where he posted a 3-2 record.
“He’s still learning in and outside of tennis, but he has a bright future,” Wells said.
So far, the toughest match from FVC foes has come in the form of a 2-1 win over Prairie Ridge’s Jacob Kim in a tough battle on April 18. Geske won after a first set 4-6 loss then won 6-0, 6-0.
Geske won in straight sets without losing a game against Jacobs and Cary-Grove as well and a non-league victory over Hononegah, 6-3, 7-5 in recent matches.
Wells said he was pleased with the team’s play against Hampshire.
“We played well, a quality match against a much-improved Hampshire team,” Wells said.
The hosts swept the singles as Mark Sobolewski won in two sets and Oscar Bakhronbekov prevailed in three sets. Hampshire gained a split in doubles. Huntley wins came from Ben Hein and Jonathon Stec at No. 1 and Ahyan Yeasin and Frank Scarpelli at No. 4.
In other lineup highlights, HHS’s No. 1 doubles duo of Hein and Stec won in straight sets against C-G; and fell in a tough three-set battle to Jacobs. The duo has a 9-5, 4-2 FVC record.
The No. 3 doubles team of Colin Stanley and Ryan Kruk prevailed over the Trojans.
In upcoming matches, the Red Raiders host Crystal Lake South May 4 for senior day. The FVC meet is at Huntley and Hampshire May 12.
