Lacrosse standout Ferrara
HUNTLEY — Play was stopped and the lacrosse ball exchanged on April 28, set aside for Huntley’s Katie Ferrara.
Ferrara joined an elite group as she gained her 100th goal in two varsity seasons. She went on to add two more goals in a hard-fought 9-8 overtime loss to Stevenson. Ferrara tallied a school record 59 goals last season and had 39 goals this season before the match against the Patriots.
It all began in fifth grade when Ferrara, daughter of Nicole and Sam, discovered lacrosse.
“He (brother Joe) got me started,” Ferrara said. Joe Ferrara is a member of the HHS frosh boys lacrosse squad. “I didn’t know anything about lacrosse at first and played with the boys’ team,” Katie said.
She plays club lacrosse with Second City of Palatine along with many HHS underclassmen, who make up the majority of the team.
“My teammates and coach believe in me,” she added. “I was hoping to get No. 100 tonight.”
Red Raiders head coach Joe Domka said Ferrara draws attention from the defense due to her scoring ability. She came into the match with a 3.3 goals per outing average and 70 shots.
“It’s her leadership,” Domka said.
The Red Raiders, 5-8 overall, rallied from a 7-5 deficit with three late second half goals for an 8-7 lead with two minutes left in regulation. Two goals were from sophomore Ally Schneider and one by Ferrara.
But the Patriots, 10-5, earned an 8-8 tie as star Lili Sorensen scored her sixth goal of the game. SHS was awarded a timeout with what turned out to be 21 seconds left and set up the goal to force overtime. They scored the game winner with two minutes left in the three-minute extra session.
“I was proud of how we played because we were down three players due to yellow cards,” Domka said.
The Red Raiders topped McHenry 20-6 April 26 in Fox Valley Conference action. HHS is 3-1 in league games and will host District 300 on May 6.
