Girls track squad aims for crown at state meet
HUNTLEY — The depth of talent on Huntley girls track and field team propelled the team to its second straight Class 3A championship May 10 but something else was on display – an ability to overcome adversity.
The Red Raiders have high goals going into the IHSA Class 3A Girls State Track and Field Meet May 18-20 at Eastern Illinois University after a 109 point showing. Eight events qualified to go to Charleston.
“To win a sectional is incredible,” Huntley coach Jason Monson said. “We now have won it in back to back years, but it’s only our fourth in program history. You have to be able to score in all events, and our depth really helps us in these meets as we have our champions, but we also have a lot of great performances to get points in fourth, fifth and sixth place.”
HHS suffered a loss as hurdler Sophie Amin hurt an ankle in the 100 meter hurdles and was taken to a hospital.
“Losing Sophie hurts, but the girls will rally around that challenge and push for a state championship,” Monson said. “I was incredibly proud of how the girls responded after that. It was hard to find a lot of joy after being gutted like that, but they persevered and took care of business. Amin is doing well.”
State Qualifiers
Senior Alexandria Johnson earned a chance to defend her Class 3A state titles in the long jump and triple jump and qualified with a third in the 100 meter run as well as the 4×100-meter relay. She edged sister Dominique in the triple jump, 12.24 meters to 12.11 meters. In the long jump, where she will be seeking her third straight title, she won with a 6.25 meter best.
“I hope we can send the seniors off with a state championship – it would be insane,” sophomore Dominique Johnson said. “I’m very happy with my triple jump but feel I definitely can do better in the long jump at state.”
“I feel comfortable with a 12-foot, I’m not sure anyone besides Dom can do that,” Alexandria Johnson said of the triple jump. “I hope to do real well and end the season well. I just try to execute.”
“There were five sectionals and they have the top two marks,” Monson said of Alexandria and Dominique Johnson’s triple jumps. “Both of them had personal records. Alexandria’s jump was the biggest of all the sectionals, and Dominique’s I think was better than anything from the other sectionals. Long jump was loaded from our sectional.”
Across the way, senior Ally Panzloff and sophomore Sienna Robertson qualified, as Panzloff won with a 43.19 meters throw and Robertson was runner-up at 37.72 meters.
“Panzloff continues to throw in the 40-meter plus range and that should do well at state,” Monson said. Robertson had a personal record and there was only one girl from the other sectionals with a longer throw.”
Panzloff threw the discus for 43 feet, 1 inch. Robertson said Panzloff is a great motivator.
“Even if I am having an off-meet, she is there motivating me and telling me to keep my chin up,” Robertson said.
“Robertson had the throw of her life, and she did it on the first try,” Panzloff, a state qualifier last year, said.
The Burak sisters, Breanna and Brittney, qualified in the 3,200-meter run in second automatically, 10:50.19 and fourth place by time, 10:59.34, respectively.
“Breanna and Brittney both ran solid races,” Monson said. “Breanna likely did enough to get her into the fastest heat in the state meet.”
Junior Victoria Evitmov won the 200-meter run in 25.51 seconds. Alexandria Johnson also qualified in the 100 meters, 12.26 seconds for third. “Both ran solid races to get to state,” Monson said.
Two relay races featured new HHS records and top efforts in the IHSA this year and for all sectionals Wednesday. The 4×100 relay of Amin, Alexandria Johnson, Evitmov and K’Leigh Sanez ran the third fastest time of sectionals in 47.66 seconds, which is fourth overall this year in Illinois.
The 4×200 meter relay of Saenz, Emmy Byers, Evtimov, and Dominque Johnson won with a time of 1:41.91 and the third fastest tine in the state this year and fastest of any sectional.
