Geske gains 1st singles FVC title
HUNTLEY — A freshman and a first doubles team will lead the Huntley boys tennis squad into battle at the Class 2A Machesney Park Harlem Sectional. The sectional is May 19-20.
Freshman No. 1 singles player Will Geske became the first Red Raider to win the Fox Valley Conference championship at that slot in the FVC tournament May 11-12. Geske will bring a 19-1 record to sectional while the first doubles team of Ben Hein and Jonathon Stec are 13-7. Geske beat Jacob Kim of Prairie Ridge, 7-5, 6-4.
“Geske had an amazing tournament,” Huntley coach Barry Wells said. “He had a tough semifinal match against Logan Wasilik (Crystal Lake Central) and was able to withstand big serving from his opponent and won a tight match. In the finals against Jacob Kim (Prairie Ridge) he was down a break in both sets. Kim played the best tennis I have seen him play so far. He was blasting big forehands and serving hard consistently. Geske had to match his play and then bring his to another level to win. It was an honor to be on court for such a great match and we are very proud of Geske for being the first No. 1 singles champion from Huntley. Incredible stuff and he is only a freshman.”
Wells believes Geske will get the second seed at sectional for No. 1 singles behind Rockford Auburn’s player. “They have never played before but have similar scores against common opponents. The top four finishers at sectional qualify for state so Geske will have a very good chance of qualifying for state.”
“I was happy to win because it was a tough match,” Geske said. “I had to get my returns deeper because he was hitting it hard. Winning No. 1 singles at conference was one of my goals. At sectional I hope to go deep into the tournament.”
“He is motivated and is a very hard worker,” Wells added. “He always wants to play against the best.”
Wells also praised the play of Hein and Stec at No. 1 doubles. The duo captured third place.
“They had a solid tournament,” Wells said. “They played well in every match, they just weren’t able to get past a talented Prairie Ridge team. They will most likely be a top two seed at sectional and will have a very good chance of qualifying.”
The Red Raiders tied for third place with 42 points with Crystal Lake Central in team standings behind Prairie Ridge and Jacobs.
“I’m proud of our team effort at the FVC tournament,” Wells said. “We played up to our seed in six out of seven spots so we were very consistent. Unfortunately, we did not upset any of the higher seeds but we still played well. The only team that did not play up to its seed was No. 2 doubles who lost to the eventual champion in the first round match.”
In addition to Geske and the first doubles duo of Hein and Stec, the Red Raiders also placed: Oscar Bakhronbehov was fourth at No. 3 singles; Ryan Kruk and Colin Stanley were fourth at No. 3 doubles; Ishaan Trivedi and Eashan Cherukuri were seventh at No. 2 doubles and Mark Sobolewski was fourth at No. 2 singles.
