Red Raiders poised for baseball playoffs
HUNTLEY — After a stellar regular season including a Fox Valley Conference championship, the Huntley baseball team is poised for post season challenges.
The Red Raiders bring a 27-7 record into their first regional test, against Rockford Jefferson May 24 at Hampshire.
“We have prepared for the post-season all year, and now we get to start on Wednesday,” Huntley head coach Andy Jakubowski said. “Our guys are ready for the post-season and now it comes down to pitching, defense and situational hitting. I feel that our non-conference schedule along with our conference schedule has prepared us for the postseason.”
Senior Andrew Ressler leads the team in wins with eight; innings, 51 and strikeouts with 55.
“We’re excited for the post-season and we feel we’re going in strong,” Ressler said.
Ressler, who will pitch at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville next season, said a switch in pitches emphasis has led to more success this year. “Last year I used my slider a lot and now I get more hitters out with change-ups.”
“Ressler has been on varsity the past four years,” Jakubowski said. “He really came into his own this year by relying on his change-up and pitching to contact. He can pitch to both sides of the plate and has been the leader of our pitching staff. SIUE is getting a character guy who will compete for innings right away as a freshman. Ressler had a fantastic career for us.”
Ressler, the familiar No. 5, showed his skills on defense as well against Palatine in a 7-5 regular season ending win May 22, He executed a pick-off and a quick turn-and-throw on a ground ball.
It’s not just work for the talented pitching staff. “We have games like pitching to the target and if you miss, you run more,” Ressler said. Other pitching leaders are Cody Aschenbach in ERA, 1.09 and Derek Huber with three saves.
Offensively, regular season leaders are batting average, Ryan Quinlan, .447; on-base percentage, Ryan Quinlan and Ryan Bakes, .538; runs scored. Ryan Bakes, 49; hits, Joe Garlin, 50; doubles, Brayden Bakes, 11; triples, Brayden Bakes and Ryan Bakes, two; home runs, Ryan Bakes, 12; RBIs, AJ Putty, 36 and stolen bases, Garlin, 20.
The Hampshire regional final, should HHS advance, is May 27.
