Regional title highlighted girls soccer season
HUNTLEY — The Huntley girls soccer season was a successful and memorable one.
Although the Red Raiders’ season ended with a 5-0 loss to Lake Zurich at the Machesney Park Harlem sectional semifinal May 23, the squad ended with the most wins in seven years. HHS won its own regional championship and had a six-game win streak before the loss to the Bears.
“Overall, I’m very proud of the girls,” Huntley head coach Matt Lewandowski said. “We sat down at the beginning of the season and set some goals – we achieved all of them. Our aim was to be above .500, and we were by far at 17-4-3, we wanted to be in the top three in the FVC, which we were at third and we wanted to win a regional, which we did.”
Lewandowski noted accomplishments of team leaders seniors Grace Helzer and Chloe Pfaff.
“Helzer and Pfaff created chemistry early and built a relationship together that was beneficial for all,” Lewandowski said. “Helzer ended with 22 goals and eight assists while Pfaff had 12 goals and 16 assists. Pfaff broke the assists record of 15 by Bre Burry and Taryn Jakubowski’s 15 assists in a single season. It makes me wonder what could have been if Pfaff had played with us all four seasons instead of just her senior year.”
The future looks strong with several talented returning players.
“In regards to our returners, we have a great outlook moving forward,” Lewandowski said. “We set a template this season that I hope will be a norm moving forward. We had plenty of contributions from younger players that played a good amount this season as well.”
