Ressler’s no-hitter nets regional title
HUNTLEY — Huntley advanced to the Dundee-Crown Sectional after a 3-0 win as senior Andrew Ressler turned in a memorable gem of a pitching performance, a 10-strikeout no hitter.
There was only one base runner allowed, who reached on a wild pitch, was taken off the bases on a pick-off from Ressler to first baseman CJ Filipek. Ressler faced the minimum of 21 batters with about an 80-pitch effort. The fan of White Sox pitching star Dylan Cease noted what was working this windy Saturday at Hampshire.
“It was first pitch strikes and I used my two-seam fastball,” Ressler said.
“Ressler attacks the hitters,” HHS coach Andy Jakubowski said. “It was great pitching, defense and timely hitting in playoff baseball.”
Ressler will pitch at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in 2023-2024.
The regional championship was the 11th for Jakubowski at HHS. The Red Raiders will face Jacobs in the Dundee-Crown sectional semifinal at 4:30 p.m. May 31. Jacobs (17-18) rallied to beat McHenry 9-5 in their regional final.
HHS was ranked sixth in Class 4A by MaxPreps.
Huntley, 29-7, struck first when senior Ryan Quinlan ripped an RBI triple in the first inning to score Brayden Bakes, who was hit by a pitch. An out at home plate prevented another Red Raider run.
Senior Ryan Bakes provided the insurance run in the third. He poked his team-leading 13th home run of the season with senior Joe Garlin on first base for a 3-0 lead.
Garlin contributed on defense as he ran for a fly ball and made a diving catch in right field in the second inning.
“I’ve been playing right field all season and working on the defense with assistant coach Derek Morehart and drills,” Garlin said.
Huntley headed to Carpentersville with back-to-back no-hitters in the playoffs. Three hurlers – Vinnie Constantino, Derek Huber and Parker Schuring held one-win Rockford Jefferson hitless in a 26-0 first round shutout May 24.
“Ironically, we also had a combined no-hitter against them last season,” Jakubowski said.
