Sectional crown win highlight for boys lacrosse
HUNTLEY — A group of young lacrosse players watched the Huntley and Lake Forest Super-Sectional from the last row at Red Raider Stadium. Some of the group carried lacrosse sticks.
Although the home team fell to the Scouts 12-2, ending the Red Raiders’ season May 30, the future looks strong. A group of nine Class of 2023 members who finished 17-5 and a second straight sectional win, will turn the leadership over to the same number of lacrosse playing members of the Class of 2024.
“I remember when I first started coaching lacrosse I went to Lake Forest and they had five under 8 teams,” HHS coach Dominic Saccomanno said. He said the Huntley program is beginning to see the growth of youth programs. Saccomanno had high praise for the outgoing group.
“This senior class was in my first group here so they’re a special group,” the coach said. “We set a goal for state although we did not accomplish that, we did a lot.”
“It’s 100 % the youth programs,” senior Connor Ardell said of the future of the sport here. Ardell will play lacrosse at Rockhurst College this fall.
For now, the present belongs to the 20-win Scouts, who also defeated the Red Raiders at the super-sectional last season. On Tuesday, they led 3-0 early and never let up.
“We had some dumb penalties early and some miscommunication,” Saccomanno said of the start.
The Red Raiders kept battling and senior Justin Jacobsen tallied the first goal for a 5-1 deficit. Junior Cole Copersmet, part of the new group of team leaders next season, scored the other.
Red Raiders players saluted the Scouts, the North Suburban Conference champs, and their elite level of play. It was Lake Forest who earned the state semifinal spot opposite St. Viator.
“We felt going in we had played pretty well at sectional,” senior AJ Baumley, headed to Lewis University to continue his lacrosse career. “But they can really sling it and shoot on a dime.”
“They were very fast, insanely fast,” senior Ben Wiley said. “But we accomplished a lot the last couple of years. It’s been a lot of fun.” Wiley will play football next season at University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
Also bidding a farewell to Huntley lacrosse were Liam Manning, Wyatt Mizerk, Brett Hoffman and Tyler Readinger.
HHS had won the sectional crown at Grayslake North with a 17-6 victory over Prairie Ridge May 26.
