Reading, fire safety featured at library
HUNTLEY — Huntley Area Public Library’s Community Storytime highlighted Huntley Area Fire Protection District’s “Fabulous Firefighters” July 6. “Sounds Like Summer” is the theme of the library’s youth reading program.
Dozens of youngsters and their parents gathered at a park near Huntley Area Public Library and learned about Huntley Area Fire Protection District’s services and enjoyed a book. Philip Adams, public education and community outreach coordinator for HFPD, read “Matt the Fire Engine” book and also gave facts about the local fire department.
“We have five fire stations at HFPD and we’re on shift from 7 a.m. to 7 a.m., for 24 hours. We’re getting busier and busier, and average about 20 calls for service each day,” Adams said. “Our district has 55 square miles with about 60,000 people.”
The youngsters, some who wore own miniature firefighters’ gear, also received plastic helmets, learned of fire safety procedures such as the importance of families having a plan and a meeting place. Children could sit in the seating area of the department’s ladder truck.
Another HFPD event will be an open house during Enjoy Huntley Week on Aug. 2 from 4 to 7 p.m. at their headquarters station, 11118 Main Street.
