A 10-year-old suffers non-life-threatening injuries after being struck by a car in Elgin Township
ELGIN — At approximately 7:40 p.m. on July 19, the Kane County Emergency Communications (Kane Comm) dispatch center received a call about a vehicle that had struck a 10-year-old juvenile near the 9N600 block of Flora Drive.
According to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, sheriff’s deputies, with assistance from the Elgin Police Department and the Elgin Fire Department, arrived on the scene and immediately located the child.
Medical attention was rendered on the scene. It was then also determined that the juvenile victim had suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The Kane County Sheriff’s Office remained on the scene to continue their investigation into the crash.
The vehicle that struck the child was described as a 2002 blue Toyota 4-door sedan, however, due to the driver having remained on scene to assist with the incident and cooperating with authorities, all other identifying information was withheld from the public.
During the investigation, it was concluded that the juvenile ran into the roadway and subsequently struck the vehicle. The child’s non-life-threatening injuries were treated at the scene and was released to their parents.
“The Kane County Sheriff’s Office reminds drivers to obey posted speed limits throughout neighborhoods where children may be riding bikes or playing. Speeding can make it challenging to slow down,” said Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain in a press release statement. “Stay alert, especially during times when children are likely to play outside. For caretakers, guardians, and parents of children, please talk to your children about roadway and bicycle/scooter safety.”
It is also advised that children be taught to stop at the curb or edge of the driveway/roadway before crossing and to never run into the street.
“Stop. Look. Listen. Please stay safe and enjoy the summer! We are truly grateful that no one was critically injured during the reported crash,” added Hain.
The driver of the Toyota involved in the incident was not cited.
