Girls track duo qualifies for national meet

HUNTLEY — Two Huntley High School girls track and field team members, Abbie Williams and Vicky Evtimov, qualified and competed among the best at a national meet in Oregon.

Williams and Evtimov qualified for the United States Amateur Track and Field National Meet in Eugene, Oregon, held July 7-9 at historic Hayward Field. The HHS duo first qualified through a regional at the University of Illinois, after the Red Raiders won the IHSA Class 3A Girls State Track and Field Championship.

Williams competed in the 400-meter hurdles and the 4×400-meter relay. Williams was in her sophomore season this past spring and was an alternate on the state qualifying 4×200 and 4×100-meter sprint relays. She was the team’s top 300 meter hurdler.

Evtimov, a junior on the state championship squad, ran on the 4×400-meter relay team at USATF which placed eighth, for all-American status. She also qualified in the 200-meter run, the 400-meter run and the 4×100-meter relay.

HHS head girls track and field coach Jason Monson congratulated both runners. “We are incredibly pleased with Williams and Evtimov qualifying for the USATF National Meet,” Monson said. “I think one of the strongest game changers for our program is the number of girls who do continue to compete over the summer.”

Evtimov was part of the Red Raiders’ 4×100-meter and 4×200-meters relays, which ended second and third, respectively, at state. She finished 22nd at state in the 200-meter run as well. She holds the second fastest 200-meter run time in school history.

Also back next season will be Sienna Robertson. She qualified for state and finished 11th overall in her sophomore season in the discus. She holds the fifth best throw in school history.

Sophie Amin, a junior, has overcome a knee injury she sustained at the sectional meet which ended her season. Amin, who is one of the top hurdlers in the state, is readying for a successful senior season in 2024.

Emmy Byers, a junior, helped the 4×200-meter relay team advance to the state meet’s finals.
