KANE COUNTY—On Aug. 21 at approximately 3:12 p.m., the Kane County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an accident with injuries at the entrance of Kaneland High School (47W326 Keslinger Road).
Upon arrival, deputies learned that a 16-year-old female Kaneland High School student from Sugar Grove had crashed her gray Subaru into a Harley Davidson motorcycle shortly after exiting the school’s parking lot.
According to an Aug. 22 statement from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, the female student drove eastbound onto Keslinger Road when her vehicle collided with the motorcycle that was traveling westbound on Keslinger Road. The initial investigation indicated that the collision caused the motorcyclist to be ejected.
The driver of the motorcycle, who was later identified as John B. Smith of the 7N300 block of McGough Road in Maple Park, sustained substantial injuries as a result of the accident. The 16-year-old student rendered aid to Smith until medics arrived.
Despite lifesaving attempts, Smith was pronounced deceased on the scene. The juvenile female was transported to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva, following the incident.
The Kane County Sheriff’s Office reported that traffic citations had been issued to the 16-year-old. Those citations were issued for failure to avoid an accident and for disobeying a stop sign.
The collection of evidence has been taken with the assistance of the Kane County Sheriff’s Office Evidence Division and the Kane County Drone Team for further analysis.
Additionally, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by police and fire agencies from the Villages of Kaneville, Maple Park, and Big Rock.
The investigation is still ongoing, with authorities asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information related to the crash to contact the Kane County Investigations Division at 630-444-1103.
