Volleyball squad marks solid start
HUNTLEY — It was a solid all-around first week for the Huntley girls volleyball team.
The Red Raiders beat Lakes in non-conference action then defeated Crystal Lake Central and McHenry in Fox Valley Conference play. All matches were 2-0 wins. There was also one college selection.
Huntley senior setter Laura Boberg has selected University of Wiscinsin-Platteville for collegiate volleyball next season.
Boberg and fellow college commit outside hitter Morgan Jones (University of Missouri) as an outside hitter) believe the Red Raiders can accomplish big things this fall. “We’re such a big family; we all trust each other,” Boberg said.
Huntley coach Karen Naymola is happy for Boberg’s college choice.
“Boberg has so positive and is one of our hardest workers,” Naymola commented.
Naymola was pleased with Huntley’s overall play early in the season.
“Each match we have done a really good job of making adjustments and fighting through challenges,” Naymola said.
McHenry match
The Red Raiders turned back the Warriors, 27-25, 25-22 in two close sets. Boberg contributed 17 assists and seven digs. Jones had seven kills and four blocks and Lizzy Williams chipped in five kills and two blocks, six digs and two aces. Marni Rodriquez contributed six digs.
The match included a rally from a seven-point deficit by HHS.
“In the first set we just could not get any momentum going,” Naymola said. “Then Jones stepped up and had a couple of big swings. Avery Gonzalez also got a couple of blocks and big kills.”
“In set two, we were down and I threw in freshman Izzy Whitehouse to serve,” Naymola said. “Whitehouse got us to within three points. Then McHenry went on a run and we were down 21-14. Jones got a big kill again, and we went on a 12-point run to close the set out for us.”
CLC match
The Red Raiders recovered from a five-point first set deficit for a 25-23 win over the Tigers in the first set. HHS led 19-9 in the second set and held off CLC, 25-19. Boberg led in assists with 18 and had 12 digs; Jones had eight kills, 11 digs and three aces and Rodriquez pitched in 10 digs.
Against Lakes, it was a 25-18, 25-16 HHS win in the season opener.
Season outlook
The Red Raiders finished undefeated at all levels of the Fox Valley Conference (FVC) last year en route to regional and sectional championships. Seven of the nine Class of 2023 members are playing volleyball for their respective colleges.
Seniors leading the way this season include setter Boberg and outside hitter Jones.
The juniors group includes outside hitter Georgia Watson. Watson is considering many collegiate options but suffered an early-season injury. Also, junior defensive specialists Marni Rodriquez and Alex Gortiz are back.
Top newcomers who have moved up through the ranks are senior middle blocker Avery Gonzalez and junior middle blocker Jocelyn Ehrling.
“We should compete for the FVC again this year,” Naymola said. “I think people know we lost a bunch of seniors but the impact they left on the program is still instilled in these upperclassmen.”
