Arrests made for the murder of an Elgin man found deceased from a gunshot wound to the chest
ELGIN — The Elgin Police Department announced on Aug. 28 that arrests had been made in connection to a murder that occurred on June 25 at approximately 1:04 a.m. in the 200 block of S. Aldine Street.
At the time of the incident, officers responded to a reported shooting that had occurred in the area. Upon arrival at the scene, an adult male with injuries was discovered.
The victim, later identified as 22-year-old Rayquan L. Smith of Elgin, was transported to Ascension St. Joseph Hospital where he was subsequently pronounced deceased. The preliminary cause of death was reported as being consistent with a gunshot wound to the chest, stated the Kane County Coroner’s Office.
Following investigative efforts, 21-year-old Tyson T. Crawford Jr. of the 1200 block of Robinwood Drive and 18-year-old Amarion L. Hayes-Garcia of the 1600 block of Alison Drive were arrested and charged by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, said the Elgin Police Department.
Both men were charged with two counts of first-degree murder; one count of armed violence, a Class X felony; two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, a Class 1 felony; and one count of criminal property damage, a Class 4 felony.
Crawford and Hayes-Garcia appeared in a Kane County bond call on Sunday, Aug. 27, where the judge set each of their bails at $1.5 million with 10% ($150,000) to apply for bond.
Back in 2020, the then 19-year-old Smith had been charged for allegedly committing gun offenses while free on bond, reported the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors alleged that in June of 2020, Elgin Police Officers conducted a traffic stop at DuPage Street and Park Row. While searching Smith, officers discovered a loaded 9mm handgun with the serial number removed and unprescribed Xanax pills on him.
Additionally, authorities found a loaded semiautomatic rifle in the front passenger seat of the vehicle Smith was in. At the time, Smith was free on a $15,000 bond for a May 2020 Kane County charge of armed robbery.
Crawford and Hayes-Garcia have their next courtroom appearances on Sept. 1 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
