Fundraiser started for South Elgin High School student involved in an accident with a semi-tractor trailer
SOUTH ELGIN — On Aug. 31, at approximately 7 a.m., the Bartlett Police Department and the South Elgin Fire Protection District were both dispatched to the intersection of IL Route 25 and Keynon Road in response to a motor vehicle crash involving a 2002 Honda Civic that was occupied by four South Elgin High School students.
Upon arrival at the scene, authorities discovered that the Honda Civic had been struck by a 2007 Mack semi-tractor trailer.
Following the preliminary investigation, Bartlett Police officers alleged that the Honda Civic was traveling northbound on IL Route 25 when it failed to yield turning left onto Keynon Drive while at a green light. It was at that moment that the Honda was struck by the Mack semi-tractor trailer that was traveling southbound on IL Route 25.
The male driver of the semi-tractor trailer, the female driver of the Honda Civic, and a female passenger from the Honda Civic reportedly suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were subsequently transported to area hospitals.
Another one of the female passengers of the Honda Civic suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital following the accident. That individual eventually needed to be airlifted to another hospital, according to law enforcement.
The Bartlett Police Department later reported that one other female Honda Civic passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, while the passenger who was airlifted to another hospital died as a result of the life-threatening injuries she sustained from the vehicle crash.
“It is with heavy hearts that the entire Bartlett community mourns with the family and friends of the South Elgin High School students involved in Thursday’s (Aug. 31) tragic car crash,” said Village of Bartlett President Kevin Wallace in a press release statement. “Words cannot capture the pain of losing two young women far too soon. Though their lives were short, there is no doubt that they brought love and joy to those they touched, teachers, classmates, friends, and family, and that they will be forever remembered.”
Following the incident, the Kane County Coroner’s Office identified the two deceased passengers of the Honda Civic as 17-year-old Kamorra Campbell of Bartlett and Tahlulay Henry, 16, of Elgin. Both females died from multiple injuries that were sustained from the motor vehicle crash, stated the Kane County Coroner’s Office.
“We also extend our support to the two young women and the truck driver who experienced the trauma of this accident,” added Wallace. “We wish them comfort and healing during this sad time. On behalf of the village and the trustees, I send our heartfelt thoughts and our deepest condolences.”
In response to the tragedy, the family of one of the individuals who died as a result of the accident started a GoFundMe to raise money for funeral expenses.
“We want to thank all of you for all of the love and support you have shown us. The love Kamorra has been getting literally brings us to tears. We appreciate every donation, every call, and every person that has shown up in person to be here for our family,” wrote Je’Kiah Sanders, the organizer for Campbell’s GoFundMe.
School District U-46 had social workers and counselors on standby for anyone who needed emotional support at the time the accident had occurred.
