Girls volleyball teammates on the road to reunion
HUTLEY — In a not too distant volleyball season, two Red Raiders leaders could meet across the net and shake hands. One will be a Wildcat, another a Tiger.
Junior Georgia Watson committed to Division 1 University of Kentucky Wildcats. She will have a chance to reunite in college with teammate senior Morgan Jones, who will be at another Southeastern Conference school, the University of Missouri Tigers.
“I made the decision for Kentucky on Aug. 21,” Watson, a 6-foot, 2-inch outside hitter, said. “I’m looking forward to playing against Jones in the SEC.” Jones agreed it will be great to play against another HHS alum.
Huntley’s volleyball program has won three straight sectional Class 4A championships and has many players from recent teams on college teams.
Head volleyball coach Karen Naymola commented on the future in college for Watson and Jones.
“I think Watson and Jones playing against each other twice a year is going to be such a unique experience for them,” Red Raiders head coach Karen Naymola said. “They are two talented athletes that lead this team and work so hard. I am really proud of both of them.”
Watson is following Jones’ lead in committing to a college prior to her senior season. “You can play more relaxed,” Jones said.
The Red Raiders are 7-0, 6-0 FVC and have won 24 straight conference matches. A 25-20, 25-14 win at Crystal Lake South Sept. 7 was another notch on the start. They are establishing their own identity, Watson said.
“We obviously lost a lot of players from last year but it’s a great environment,” Watson said. “Getting off to a good start this season is huge.”
Watson had a double digit kill effort at CLS with 10 and shined with seven digs in a shutout win (25-4, 25-23) over Hampshire the match before. Jones had five kills against the Gators (the last FVC team to beat Huntley). Setter senior Laura Boberg had an outstanding match with 21 assists.
“The team did a nice job of making adjustments after the first set, which was a rocky start,” Naymola said.
In another FVC win, the Red Raiders downed Prairie Ridge, 25-15, 25-18 Aug. 31.
Jones led the attack with 10 kills and also contributed seven digs defensively. Boberg had a solid game with 21 assists, one kill and five digs.
Alex Goritz paced the defense with 14 digs and Marni Rodriquez added nine. Watson notched six digs, one assist, three blocks and one dig. Williams added three kills, one block, five digs and one ace.
