Bounce back bid sought for homecoming
HUNTLEY — Huntley will try and have a football homecoming bounce back when the Red Raiders host neighbor and Fox Valley Conference rival Hampshire Sept. 22.
“Homecoming is an exciting time but it can lead to distractions,” Huntley head coach Mike Naymola said. “We just want to keep our focus and prepare our best for Hampshire. They’ve proven to be much improved and we will need to be ready for them. I have faith in our team that after the last game they can’t wait to get back out there to get rid of the bad taste of that game. Our team has shown great resiliency this season, dating back to off-season workouts and they will be ready.”
The Red Raiders fell from the ranks of the unbeaten as Prairie Ridge (4-0, 4-0 FVC) used a dominant second half to a 27-14 win Sept. 15. HHS dropped to 3-1, 3-1 record.
The Red Raiders stayed competitive with Prairie Ridge in the first half. Haiden Janke, who had more than 300 yards rushing his first three games, scored on a 15-yard run for a 7-7 tie. A 70-yard touchdown pass from Braylon Bower to Zack Garifo gave Huntley a 14-7 lead. PR scored at the close of the first half but a two-point conversion try was stopped.
Naymola said Bower was efficient as he completed almost 80 percent of his passes, including a 15-yard pass to Omare Segarra on the first TD drive and another 10-yard toss to Jacob Witt. Janke was limited to 50 yards rushing and one touchdown, but had a 20-yard run.
Defense leaders
Garifo and Ryan Sweeney turned in double-digit tackles totals with 11 and 10, respectively. Garifo added two assists and one fumble recovery. Sweeney had five assists.
Also, Charlie Condon recorded seven solo tackles, one forced fumble and one tackle for loss. Jack Coss had three solos, two assists, one forced fumble and one tackle for loss. Carter Pope recorded one solo, one assist and one tackle for loss. Jack Laughlin had one forced fumble.
“After some film breakdown, I was happy with how hard the defense played throughout the game,” Naymola said. “They did not back down and matched them physically. We missed some important tackles but it wasn’t an effort problem, more execution. They played hard for four quarters.”
Up next
The Whip-Purs come into the HHS homecoming game at 2-2, 2-2 following a 36-28 loss to Crystal Lake South. Huntley dropped to a second place as Cary-Grove and Prairie Ridge are the undefeated teams at 4-0, 4-0.
