Quick learner Nielsen, squad start fast
HUNTLEY — When it comes to fast starts in sports, some are just quicker than others.
McHenry didn’t know what hit it as Huntley forward Hudson Nielsen got things going on his way to a hat trick Sept. 14. Nielsen scored his first goal 22 seconds into the Red Raiders’ 7-0 win which began Fox Valley Conference play.
“It was off the kickoff, we sent six players on top and took up a lot of space. I got behind them and Isaac Jacobo made the pass,” Nielsen said.
Nielsen reported he got a very eager and early start in his soccer career, too. “I started playing when I was three-years-old,” the forward said.
More recently, playing in elite soccer skill programs such as Eclipse in Oakbrook Terrace and the Rockford Raptors helped hone his skills. He and Jacobo were both All-FVC and All-section with 11-goal seasons last year.
“We’re very unpredictable, we have a lot of different skills,” Nielsen said. “We wanted to send a statement to the FVC tonight.”
Nielsen leads the team with eight goals and 20 points through 10 matches. The Red Raiders were 6-3-1 record.
“Nielsen has always been a highly skilled player but as he has matured through the seasons he’s become a play-maker and a goal scorer for us,” Huntley head coach Matt Lewandowski said. “He works hard and is highly competitive. When he turns it on, there are few in the area that would best him in a match-up.”
Huntley has dominated the opposition for a 30-8 edge in goals. Senior Anthony Aweve, who scored one goal and one assist against McHenry, has five goals and one assist for 11 points. Seniors Jacob Jacobo and Talon Sargent have 10 points with four goals and two assists. Senior Tyler Roberts has three goals and one assist for seven points.
Senior goalies Jack Bakey and Ethan Robertson are nearly identical in total saves, 25 to 24.
Quick players are a strength of the Red Raiders.
“We don’t have a slow player on the team. We have a lot of team speed to go with their technical skill,” Lewandowski said. The Red Raiders have two FVC matches this week, at Jacobs Sept. 19 and host Prairie Ridge Sept. 21.
Win over Hononegah
The Red Raiders traveled to Rockton Sept. 16 and beat Hononegah 2-0. Kyle Paler and Jacobo scored the goals. Mason Leslie added an assist. Ethan Robertson and Jack Bakey shared goalie duties.
