Boys golf shoots for FVC title
HUNTLEY — A close win over Hampshire in dual match play and a regional tournament preview were among events where Huntley’s boys golf fared well recently.
The Red Raiders edged Hampshire, 149-153 in dual match action Sept. 14. Then it was a strong outing for the Dundee-Crown Charger Invite Sept. 16.
“It was a really encouraging week for our guys,” head coach Collin Kalamatas said. “We finally had our lineup at full strength and we really proved that we can be one of the top teams in the Fox Valley Conference. Our guys and really gained some confidence but we still remain hungry for more.”
Senior Nooa Hakala has been among the leaders for Red Raider golfers this season.
“Hakala has had a real solid career,” Kalamatas said. “His game got better each year. You can tell he puts in a lot of time and really has developed a routine and mental approach that suits his game well. He’s been so consistent and it’s awesome to see it.”
Hakala led the Red Raiders with a 36 score against Hampshire. All counting scores broke 40 as Nathan Elm shot a 38 and Taig Bhathal and Sam Locasio had 39s. Hakala has shot a 35 this season.
At the Dundee-Crown meet at Randall Oaks, Elm finished in a tie for eighth place with a 73. Hakala shot a 74, followed by Bhathal’s 78 and Locascio’s 84. Huntley turned in a 309 team score.
“It was a great experience leading into the post-season,” Kalamatas said of D-C’s meet. “That’s the same course as our regional and we faced some of the teams that we will see in both the regional and sectional.”
The Hampshire Class 3A regional meet is Sept. 27 at Randall Oaks.
The Red Raiders hope to continue the confidence at the FVC Championship at McHenry Country Club Sept. 21.
“We have a huge match Sept. 19 against Prairie Ridge that will determine where we are in the conference heading into the FVC Championship,” Kalamatas said. “Once the Prairie Ridge match is decided, that should tell us a lot about what our chances are on Thursday. Obviously, our goal is to finish as high up as possible. Winning an FVC Championship would be very meaningful for this group. We’re going to keep working hard to make that happen.”
