Elm right at home on golf course
HUNTLEY — When it comes to dedication to golf, it’s a team effort at Nathan Elm’s house. That includes even the house itself.
“I put a small dent in the drywall,” Elm said of the golf simulator room.
Elm led the Red Raiders to a third place finish at the Class 3A Hampshire Regional with a 75 score, which tied for second place Sept. 27. Huntley edged Crystal Lake Central, 319-322, for the third and final team advancing spot, moving on to the Mt. Prospect Sectional. Hampshire won the team title with a 304, followed by Jacobs’ 312. The sectional tournament is Oct. 2 at Prospect Country Club.
“I’ve been golfing at Randall Oaks since my junior golf days,” Elm said. “The course hasn’t been very good to me lately.”
Elm used last year’s near miss for the IHSA State Tournament, by one shot, as well as seeing the same happen to graduated Brandon Busky at Randall Oaks’ in West Dundee at sectional for motivation.
“I played in about 20 tournaments and was fortunate to win a few,” he said of the summer.
Elm is all-business on the golf course. “You have to be 100 percent committed every time you step over the golf ball,” Elm said.
Huntley head coach Collin Kalamatas praised Elm’s approach.
“He is a very analytical golfer, almost robotic. He measures every shot. He has a very good routine,” the coach said.
The team advancement to sectional makes it five of six years making sectional.
“Our goal as a team was to make sectional,” Kalamatas said. “We had a lot of solid rounds.”
In addition to Elm, Nooa Hakala and Taig Bhathal shot 79s; Sam Locascio had an 86; Jeremy Chadwick a 91 and Austin Mullen a 97.
