Huntley’s soccer slide caps big win
HUNTLEY — You can see it coming after most Huntley goals this season.
After star Hudson Nielsen’s 11th goal of the season, a special soccer celebration took place, a “soccer slide” as he was joined by several teammates in celebration for a 4-2 win against Crystal Lake South.
Huntley’s victory gave it the Fox Valley Conference lead with a 10-4-1, 5-0 record. CLS was 4-1 FVC.
Huntley’s high-powered attack turned reached 40 goals in 15 games. HHS has a 40-10 commanding lead in total goals.
Against CLS, Nielsen’s 69th minute score provided a 3-2 advantage. Jack Breunig contributed his second goal of the season and three assists. Midfielder Mason Leslie’s tally was his first. Goalie Jack Bakey had four saves.
CLS had a 2-0 lead in the first half including a goal five minutes in, but Nielsen scored followed by three second half goals.
Red Raiders head coach Matt Lewandowski explained the main reason for the uptick in offense.
“The big difference between last year to this year is that more guys are stepping up,” Lewandowski said. “Last year we channeled through Nielsen and Isaac Jacobo pretty exclusively. This year, we have 12 guys on the stat sheet with goals. Against CLS, it was our midfield with Breunig, Nielsen and Leslie. Tuesday against Hampshire,(a 1-0 win), it was one of our outside defenders, Finley Williams. We have numerous skill sets in our attack that are all threats in their own way.”
The Red Raiders plan on keeping their FVC momentum.
“There’s still a lot of work to do,” Lewandowski said. “Crystal Lake Central (the next opponent) is tough and Burlington Central is improving. We were both undefeated in the conference, and we won, so we’re in good position now. We were able to make adjustments to control the game because they like to fast-break, in the second half.”
Leslie scored the game-tying goal off a header as Breunig got the ball to him.
“Nielsen gets so much attention, it opens it up for the rest of us,” Leslie said. “I knew my shot was going to go in.”
“It’s big,” Nielsen said of the FVC race. “They’re a good team but I think we’re the best team in the conference now. I’m so proud of the boys.”
Latest statistics show Nielsen leads with 27 points and almost two goals per game; Talon Sargent is next with six scored two assists and 14 points; Anthony Aweve reached five goals, three assists and 13 points while Jacobo has tallied four goals and three assists for 11 points. Bakey has recorded 48 saves.
