Senior runners take a bow
HUNTLEY — More than a dozen cross country runners were honored at Huntley’s annual senior day at a triangular meet Oct. 3. Seniors honored are: girls Ava Allison, Holly Fritz, Samantha Charalambous; Alyssa Keaty and Addison Raistrick.
Senior boys honored are: Luke Grubbs, Zach Zuzzio, Ryan Anderson, Logan Borzych, John Collins, Zach Donlea, Noah Jensen, Matt Markowski, Andrew McVeen and Jacob Stalino.
Allison, Grubbs and Zuzzio have helped the underclassmen learn the nuances of the sport.
“Allison, Zuzzio and Grubbs share a post-season goal of helping their teams qualify for the state meet,” head coach Matt Kaplan said. “All three seniors have have done a great job this season leading our groups being that we are very young on both teams.”
While the top seven did not run at the HHS course, the meet gave a chance for others to be in the spotlight. For the boys, Murkowski finished first of the HHS competitors. He is a newcomer to cross country, in his second year, after playing soccer.
Kaplan noted two girls who finished in the top 10 in the meet, which also included Burlington Central and McHenry.
“Juniors McKenna Corso and Emily Fritte ran well, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively,” the coach said.
Peoria meet
The Red Raiders’ boys and girls teams traveled to Peoria for a meet Sept. 30 and a chance to run at the IHSA State Cross Country Meet course at Detweiller Park.
The girls team placed second to Edwardsville in Class 3A with 109 points. Freshman April Rahman led the way to sixth with a time of 18:23.60. Five girls placed in the top 25, including Cori Klivinger, 14th, 18:48.10; Allison, 20th, 18:52.60 and Morgan Sauber, 23rd, 19:00.40; and in 49th, Aspen Maldonaldo, 20:06.50.
The boys team was led by Nitz in fifth place as the junior had a time of 15:01.50. Zuzzio was next at 59th, 15:56.80. Other varsity times were Nathan Sauber’s 17:00.90 and Brandon Thompson’s 16:47.70.
“It’s helpful to run at Detweiller simply to remind the team is where we expect to finish our season. It can be helpful for the team to practice what it could be like on the state trip weekend, staying overnight at a hotel, etc. Overall it was a good weekend and the teams did the best they could on Saturday given the warm conditions,” Kaplan said.
The post-season route begins with the Fox Valley Conference meets at Plato Park in Plato Township Oct. 14. The Class 3A regional meet is hosted by Hampshire Oct. 21, the sectional at Lake Park in Roselle Oct. 28 and the IHSA State Meet at Peoria Nov. 4.
