Soccer nets FVC crown share; regional next
HUNTLEY — The Red Raiders boys soccer team regained its momentum on offense in the regular season finale.
Huntley secured a share of the Fox Valley Conference championship with a convincing 4-0 win over Burlington Central Oct. 10. The Red Raiders tied Crystal Lake South with 8-1 league records and were 14-5-1.
Hudson Nielsen got the scoring going with two penalty kicks in the first half with a 2-0 lead. They upped his goal scoring total to 14 on a team which has topped 50 scores. Senior Talon Sargent is runner-up in goals with seven and classmate Anthony Aweve has six.
While the Red Raiders were winning, Crystal Lake South was as well, 2-0 over Jacobs, securing the FVC title would be shared. Huntley beat Crystal Lake South, 4-2, and its only league loss was to Cary-Grove 1-0 in overtime, which inspired the Red Raiders on a chilly Senior Night.
“We took it personal after the loss to Cary-Grove,” Nielsen said. “It helped a lot to get those two goals early.”
Senior Kyle Paler scored a second half goal on another penalty kick, his fifth this season. Nielsen assisted on senior Tyler Roberts’ fourth goal of the season, in the second half.
“All season long, it’s been our goal to win conference and we gained a tie against a competitive Crystal Lake South squad,” Huntley coach Matt Lewandowski said.
The large margin meant some substitutes finished the contest. “This is the deepest team I’ve ever had,” Lewandowski said.
Defensively, senior goalie Jack Bakey made three saves in another shutout win. He has been playing the position for five years. Bakey has led with 73 of the team’s 104 saves.
Seniors who helped guide the team also include Ethan Robertson, Elias Ramon, Brandon Foster, Jack Breunig, Gavin Eagan, Jacob Hamilton, Isaac Jacobo and Jonas Brown.
The Red Raiders hope to continue to play well in the Class 3A post-season, which begins Oct. 17 against Rockford Jefferson at Red Raider Stadium. Jefferson has an 8-9 overall record. McHenry and Dundee-Crown clash in the second regional match. The regional final is at 5 p.m. Oct. 20 at HHS.
