Nitz, girls titles highlight FVC cross country

HUNTLEY — Huntley’s girls cross country team placed three runners in the top 10 as the Red Raiders won the Fox Valley Conference championship at the Plato Park course Oct. 14.

The Red Raiders returned with an individual champion as junior Tommy Nitz defended his FVC boys crown with a time of 15:19.00, beating Will Gelon of Prairie Ridge’s 15:29.35. All runners competed against conditions this rainy, muddy Saturday morning.

“As a team, you acknowledge that the conditions on a given day are the same for everyone,” HHS coach Matt Kaplan said. “We talked about focusing on how hard we can run no matter what weather shows up. Our girls team charged out from the gun and ran to victory knowing that if all 7 girls ran tough they could win the title.  Cori Kilvinger in the final 100 meters of the race moved up four or five spots to finish fifth overall. Aspen Maldonado had a huge day for her team, finishing 13th overall helping her team to the FVC title.”

Freshman Haley Rahman led the HHS girls with a third place finish, 18:25.62; sophomore Klivinger clocked an 18:43.93 and senior Ava Allison finished ninth, and Moldonado was 13th, 19:07.60. Morgan Sauber, a freshman, also made the top 15, in 19:14.54.

Boys FVC meet

“Our boys team came into the conference meet knowing we could be a top  three team and that’s what they finished,” Kaplan said.  “This meet was the strongest our boys team has looked in weeks. All seven boys brought great attitudes and energy to this race. I’m proud of all of them. Nitz winning the race and Zach Zuzzio earned all-conference honors finishing in ninth overall were other great highlights on the boys side.”

Zuzzio finished in 16:03.49 while Andrew Raistrick was 26th with a 16:47.35 effort.

The boys ended with 100 points, finishing behind champion Prairie Ridge with 68 and Jacobs’ 72 score.

The boys and girls teams are at the Hampshire Class 2A Regional meet Oct. 21. Qualifiers move on to the Lake Park Sectional in Roselle Oct. 28.

“The Hampshire Regional is another great opportunity for our team to grow together,” Kaplan said. “The girls will be matched up with FVC team Hampshire for the second week in a row along with Rockton Hononegah looking to earn the regional title. On the boys side, Hononegah and Rockford Guilford along with our Red Raiders will be three teams up front looking to earn that regional title.”
