B-day special: boys soccer in regional final
HUNTLEY — Huntley’s boys soccer team’s top goal scorer, Hudson Nielsen, made his 18th birthday celebration a memorable one.
Nielsen, a senior, reached 17 goals on the season with a hat trick and added an assist. The Red Raiders advanced to its Class 3A regional final with a 6-0 shutout of Rockford Jefferson Oct. 17.
“We had a meeting and decided that Nielsen has the ‘it’ factor,” Huntley coach Matt Lewandowski said. “He can turn around a match when he wants to. His footwork is always two or three steps ahead of anyone else.”
The Red Raiders have rediscovered their touch on offense, with 16 goals since an upset loss to Cary-Grove. HHS has a 15-5-1 record. Huntley will seek a spot at the Round Lake Sectional at 5 p.m., Oct. 20 against Dundee-Crown at Red Raider Stadium.
“I’m happy to get a hat trick on my 18th birthday,” Nielsen said. “After the 1-0 loss to Cary-Grove, we’ve been playing mad and want to take it out on the next opponent.”
Nielsen has recorded 40 points, goals and assists, this season at 41.
Fellow senior Gavin Eagan tallied his third goal of the season and added an assist.
“We have so many players who can score,” Eagan said. “If you stop one, we have two to three others.”
Like Nielsen, he too feels the C-G match “showed we can’t relax.”
For Eagan, soccer has been a longtime commitment.
“The career has been great,” Eagan said. “I’ve been playing soccer since I was 5 or 6-years-old. I’ve played every position.”
Against Jefferson, the offense, in addition to Nielsen, included goals from Isaac Jacobo, his sixth of the season and Elias Ramon, his third. Max Connell contributed an assist. Ramon’s shot came with 10 minutes to go from 25 yards out.
Senior goalie Jack Bakey notched the shutout, his 10th, and made five saves.
Regional final
Dundee-Crown advanced to the regional final after a 2-1 win over McHenry Oct. 17 in the other regional semifinal. The Chargers are 14-7-1 overall. The Red Raiders defeated the Chargers 4-1 on Oct. 5. The regional champ moves on to the Round Lake Sectional Oct. 24.
“Anything can happen in the playoffs, especially with a hard working team like D-C,” Lewandowski said.
