Bowlers shoot for state meet return
HUNTLEY — After earning a spot in the IHSA Boys Bowling State Tournament last season, the Red Raiders are motivated for a strong 2023-24 season.
Back on the traveling squad are juniors Austin Tenglin, Matthew Fishman, Joseph Humphrey, Landen Conforti, Matt Hoglind and Nick Gaspari. Freshman Noah Waters is also a part of the traveling competition group.
Fourth-year head coach Jacob Wagner summed up the early season work.
“Our turnout was great,” Wagner said. “We currently have 32 total boys signed up for bowling with 17 freshmen, seven sophomores, and eight juniors. We have six varsity returners this year. They are all juniors and all are strong bowlers. This year we appointed Tenglin as our captain. This is a tight knit group of guys who all get along well. They had a blast making it to the State Tournament last year and look to build off that success.”
Tenglin, who advanced to the second day of the 2023 IHSA State Tournament at O’Fallon, is ready for the new year.
“We all bowled in the same summer league at Poplar Creek,” Tenglin said. “I would say our scores showed significantly as we experienced different lane conditions and practiced our skills.”
Bowling against the top bowlers in Illinois on the second day will motivate Tenglin for the new season.
Each practice is a populated one at Bowl-Hi Lanes in Huntley, plus more middle school students have shown interest in the summer program.
“We have a ton of freshmen coming out this year and we always keep the door open for talent to rise to the top,” Wagner said. “Our coaching staff pushes for great practices, to build and get better everyday.”
Players and coaches alike are excited about the new format of the Fox Valley Conference/ Kishwaukee River Conference Bowling Alliance, which will also include a tournament. It includes both boys and girls teams. The first match in the alliance was Nov. 6 when Huntley faced Johnsburg. Other schools in the alliance are Burlington Central, McHenry, Marengo and Harvard.
“The boys have goals to improve and succeed more than last year,” Wagner said. “We had an awesome finishing 11-2 last season. We are looking forward to the new challenge of our FVC-KRC Alliance that allows us to compete against surrounding schools in a different way than we have ever had. There are a lot of good teams out there this year. We are solely focused on becoming the best team we can be right now. I have a ton of respect for the coaches in the area and know they are putting together great teams as well.”
Huntley’s boys bowling alumni, both of whom are continuing their career in college, are Caleb Vergona at Judson University and Joshua Waters at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
