Nitz reaches goal of All-State Cross Country

HUNTLEY — A strong finish led Huntley cross country runner Tommy Nitz of gaining a goal he set for himself for the IHSA State Boys Cross Country Meet.

Nitz finished 21st in Class 3A’s boys meet at Detweiller Park in Peoria, and with the top 25 and achieved All-State honors. Nitz, a junior competing at the IHSA State Meet for the third time, finished with a time of 14:42.48 on Nov. 4.

Nitz commented on his finish and experience at the state meet in general.

“My teammates were at the bottom of the hill and I heard them scream ’27,’” Nitz said. “It gave me a big boost of adrenaline and there was a pack of runners just in front of me so I knew I had a chance. I started my kick about 40 meters to go. And I knew I was 26th. I thought that there was no way I could come all this way just to be one spot away. I just kept kicking and passed five more runners.”

“There were so many fans and the atmosphere was great,” Nitz said. Being All-State is a great feeling because I have accomplished the goal I’ve set for myself before the season. It also gave me the sense of relief that all of the hard work I’ve put in has paid off.”

Red Raiders head cross country coach Matt Kaplan commented on Nitz and the achievements of the girls team, who qualified as a squad and finished 14th.

“I’m super proud of how our girls and Nitz competed at the State Meet,” Kaplan said. “With Nitz we knew he was capable of being one of the top 25 boys. We talked about how each mile of the race would unfold and how he would respond to each part of the race. Nitz worked the plan and his execution was outstanding. He moved from 40th at the mile to 30th at the two-mile and sprinted to a top 25 finish. Nitz continued to prove to himself that when he is focused on what he wants, he will find a way to reach the goal he set for himself.”

Girls race

“All the girls ran personal bests on the state course and in the process led to a 14th place finish in Class 3A,” Kaplan said. “All of them did a great job moving up through the race. I’m very excited about what this team accomplished this season and will be returning the majority of the team for next season so we have a lot to look forward to.”

The Huntley girls were led by freshman Haley Rahman, who ended 45th in 17:58.33. Senior Ava Allison concluded her career with a 99th place finish, 18:29.32. Also for Huntley, sophomore Cori Klivinger was 108th, 18:33.09; sophomore Aspen Maldonado, 121st, 18:42.60; freshman Morgan Sauber, 18:45.84; and junior Ava Berardi, 19:52.50.
