Soccer team captain Breunig looks back
HUNTLEY — Huntley High School senior boys soccer team captain Jack Breunig concluded his prep career by receiving All Fox Valley Conference team honors, as well as an Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association All-Section selection.
Breunig reflected on his long dedication to the sport, which began as a youngster, in a recent survey.
Describe your years in youth soccer and club teams.
Breunig: “I started playing soccer when I was 5-years-old. I started out playing park district rec soccer, (where Gavin Eagan’s dad was my coach). I moved into club soccer, for Heat United for several years, then switched to Chicago Inferno in 2018 (played in Copa League and Super Y League simultaneously for three seasons) and finally for Rockford Raptors ECNL in 2023 where I will finish my competitive soccer time.”
Who has helped you the most at middle school or high school?
Breunig: “Soccer wise, my middle school years, Ewerton Andrade was my coach for Chicago Inferno and when I was 12-years-old and coached me for five seasons. These years are crucial for a player’s development and his technique above all mindset really helped me develop well as a player. His coaching style was perfect for me to excel and grow as best as I could.”
What sports other than soccer have you participated in?
Breunig: “I played for Huntley Mustangs youth football team for two years before switching full time to soccer in 2016. I also play basketball with my friends on a high school rec team with Huntley Park District.”
Describe your off-season training.
Breunig: “Club season typically runs November to June but games don’t start until March. In the winter off season months of club, I have traveled to Tampa, Florida for Super Y Nationals, participated in ECNL showcases, played in an indoor competitive league at Canlan and spent any remaining free time training on my own with friends at open gym times. For many summers, I played in Super Y League under Chicago Inferno and traveled throughout the Midwest for three seasons. We won the Midwest bracket each summer which qualified us for Nationals in Tampa every December. The only down time is really during the holidays for me.”
“Last summer I spent the bulk of time training with my HHS teammates on our own to prepare for senior year. Any time I have a long period of free time I always keep myself busy if it is juggling, cone drills or just cardio.”
