Huntley outlasts Marengo for bowling win
HUNTLEY — It’s a match of “old home week” when Huntley and Marengo boys bowling teams clash.
Huntley won the first of three meetings and moved to 4-0 in duals with a 3,854 to 3,530 pins victory Nov. 15 at Hi-Bowl Lames. Juniors Austin Tenglin and Matthew Fishman topped 700 series, with scores of 730 and 708, respectively. Junior Joe Humphrey just missed 700 with a 699 score. Freshman Noah Waters contributed a 584 and junior Matthew Hoglind a 547 in the KRC/FVC dual.
“It’s special when we play Marengo for me because I lived there until the third grade and a lot of their bowlers are my friends,” HHS Tenglin said. “It was pretty good. I have a baseline of a 600 score.”
Huntley coach Jacob Wagner was happy with the team’s effort Wednesday. Fishman had the high game of the Huntley scores with a 268. Also contributing were junior Landon Conforti, 586 series; freshman Noah Waters, 584 and Matthew Hoglind, 540.
“It was a great effort against a great Marengo team,” Wagner said.
Huntley’s juniors are team leaders this season as there are no seniors.
“The young guys are learning well and I help them in the drills,” Tenglin said.
Wagner is pleased with the team’s start to the season. HHS is 3-0 and has 25 of 27 possible points in the new KRC/FVC alliance.
“The team is progressing great,” Wagner said. “The juniors are really stepping up on the varsity level. They are bringing it every week in duals and talking with each other. Tenglin and Conforti are really taking charge at practice with the younger guys as well helping them along with the coaches. Match totals look great especially being so early in the season.”
The Red Raiders recorded a dual win against McHenry, 3,606 to 3,457 Nov. 13 at Raymond’s Lanes. Three bowlers reached 600 plus series totals as Tenglin rolled a 638; Fishman a 633 and Conforti had a 633. Humphrey was next at 588; Waters rolled a 583 and Gaspari contributed a 549 score.
Saturdays bring area tournaments and on Nov. 11 Huntley competed at Lake Park.
“Saturday at Lake Park was a good day full of great teams,” Wagner said. “We placed 12th and I think the boys would agree that we needed to do a few little things better to move up against those teams. They are really becoming one team and getting together nicely. We are seven deep at the varsity level and can only bowl five per each game at our Saturday invites. The boys are taking charge when they think they have the look we need and talking with each other about all the things we need to be successful. They are selfless and really looking to win as a team instead of just individual awards. This makes coaching a lot more fun.”
Upcoming meets are at the Plainfield North tournament Nov. 18. In dual matches, HHS will face Grant away Nov. 20 and host Woodstock Nov. 22.
