Punter Wojtas assists DuPage to title game
HUNTLEY — Huntley’s Mason Wojtas finished his high school punting career as one of the IHSA leaders.
Wojtas has continued to be a top notch punter at the College of DuPage, a junior college in Glen Ellyn. He averages 37.2 yards per kick after 24 punts.
“He’s done a great job for us,” COD Head Coach Matt Rahn said. “This is the deepest class of kickers we’ve ever had. Wojtas flat-out won the starting punter job.”
College of DuPage achieved a 10-1 regular season record with a 37-21 win over Georgia Military Nov. 4. The Chaps will host the NJCAA Championship game Dec. 2 against a foe to be named by the NJCAA next week.
Wojtas, working with long snapper Kyle Dublinski, has been able to make field position a challenge for opponents. Wojtas owns several top 10 rankings in the NJCAA. His 67-yard punt ranked second; total yardage, 966 is fifth; kicks inside the foes 20-yard line, six, is sixth.
Wojtas’ best game was 279-total yards against Rochester, Minn., and 67 of those yards came on one punt. And that was in a battle that ended in a 24-21 victory for COD, on a game-high seven punt afternoon.“He has the ability to flip the field for us, and people don’t understand how important that is. The 67-yard punt is an example of what he can do,” Rahn said of Wojtas. “He has punted on grass fields, in high wind, all of it.”
Now Wojtas will be able to show his talents before a NJCAA football championship game audience.
