HUNTLEY — The dual meet portion of the boys wrestling season is off to a solid start for the Red Raiders.
Several Red Raiders wrestlers posted perfect 3-0 records at the season opening Palatine Fremd quad meet Nov. 21. Huntley downed Fremd 33-29, Grayslake Central 42-22 and Lake Zurich 60-12.
Recording 3-0 records were: senior Markos Mihalopoulos at 285 pounds; freshman Gavin Nischke at 132; senior Shane McGuine at 150; freshman Radic Dvorak at 157 and soph Cameron Abordo at 113. Going 2-1 were freshman Collin Abordo at 106; freshman Julian Guiierrez, 120; sophomore Matthew Keaty at 138; junior Vlad Maluhin at 144; senior Alex Napientak at 165 and junior Wyatt Theobald at 190.
“I believe we wrestled pretty well for our first time out, HHS coach BJ Bertelsman said. “We went 3-0 in a quad that we went 1-2 at last year, so that was a good feeling. We beat No. 24 ranked Class 3A Fremd and No. 23 ranked in Class 2A Grayslake Central. A lot of young kids in the lineup did great. Overall we started seven underclassmen last week.”
The Red Raiders travel to Coralville, Iowa for the Dan Gable Boys Donnybrook tournament Dec. 1-2. HHS will host wrestle Jacobs to begin the Fox Valley Conference season duals Dec. 7.
“The Dan Gable Donnybrook will be an eye opener for a lot of our kids,” Bertelsman said. “It will be the largest tournament they will be in until the State Championships. A total of 39 teams with multiple nationally ranked teams and wrestlers will be e grind. Hopefully, the kids will wrestle their best and gain experience that will help them in February. My goal is to drastically improve our team finish from last year and get some wrestlers on the podium.”
