Boys ready for FVC games after solid tourney
HUNTLEY — The Red Raiders boys basketball team advanced to the fifth place game of the Chuck Dayton Classic at DeKalb, ending with a close contest, a 66-60 loss to Wheaton Academy.
Junior Christian Wilson gained DeKalb All-Tournament team honors as he finished with a 14-point effort against Wheaton Academy. Omare Segarra tallied 16 points and had seven rebounds for Huntley player of the game honors Dec. 30. Ryan Sweeney added nine points and Bryce Walker eight.
Wilson also had a 20-point game on the strength of a four of seven three-pointers performance in an 80-48 victory over Chicago Marshall, while Lucas Crosby added 14 points and Walker had 13.
“I thought we played really hard, we were a little disappointed in letting a 10-point lead slip away in the last game,” HHS Coach Colin Kalamatas said.
Kalamatas said that both Wilson and Segarra had good weeks at DeKalb.
“Wilson did a good job with his outside shot and rebounding,” the coach said. “Ethan Blackmore had a sprained ankle in the third game and Wilson got his first start in the fourth. Segarra was aggressive and played well to his strengths.”
HHS heads to the 2024 portion of the season with a 10-6 record. They downed Naperville Central, 49-37 in the consolation round behind Wilson’s 17 point effort and Segarra added 11.
HHS will host McHenry as Fox Valley Conference play resumes Jan. 10 following a non-conference clash at Boylan Catholic Jan. 6.
Stevenson game
Former HHS head coach Will Benson was honored for his nine years leading the Huntley squad as Stevenson visited Dec. 21. His successor, Collin Kalamatas, presented Benson with a plaque. Benson’s Patriots won 47-44.
