Algonquin man officially charged after holding his girlfriend at knifepoint for several hours
ALGONQUIN TOWNSHIP — The Kane County Sheriff’s Department announced that through further investigative work with assistance from its Patrol Division and Investigative Division, more evidence was obtained that led to an upgrade in charges against 32-year-old Patricio J. Salas of the 400 block of Natoma Trail in Algonquin.
The new charges against Salas include the following:
Aggravated criminal sexual assault armed with a dangerous weapon other than a firearm, a Class X felony; aggravated criminal sexual assault that acts in a manner that threatens the life of the victim, a Class X felony; aggravated domestic battery involving strangulation, a Class 2 felony; and aggravated unlawful restraint, a Class 3 felony.
According to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 6:25 a.m. on Jan. 2, Kane County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 400 block of Natoma Trail for the report of a domestic battery disturbance between Salas and his girlfriend that lasted several hours.
During the incident, the woman was reportedly held at knifepoint in a bedroom by Salas and was unable to leave. She attempted to call 9-1-1 several times, but Salas was able to remove the phone from her possession.
The woman was finally able to text “help” to her brother-in-law, who subsequently made his way to the residence. The sheriff’s office states that an altercation ensued between the brother-in-law and Salas, which gave the woman the opportunity to escape the confines of the bedroom.
Salas had fled the scene upon the arrival of law enforcement; however, he was able to be located down the roadway a short time later. Salas had reportedly crashed his vehicle, resulting in him sustaining minor injuries.
During initial interviews that were conducted on the scene, the woman informed law enforcement that she was in a relationship with Salas, and during the incident, she was held at knifepoint against her will where she was unable to contact anyone for help.
Medical attention was rendered to the visible injuries that the woman sustained during the incident. Salas was treated for his injuries at an undisclosed location as is standard procedure, said the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.
Once Salas was cleared by medical staff, he was taken into custody by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.
Salas remains in custody at the Kane County Adult Justice Center in St. Charles where he was denied bail. His next court date is scheduled to take place on Jan. 24 at 9:01 a.m. in Courtroom 211 of the Kane County Judicial Center.
