
Humphrey reflects on bowling success
HUNTLEY — Huntley junior bowler Joey Humphrey looked back on his start in the sport, how the team’s junior leaders assist younger bowlers and goals as the Red Raiders’ post-season begins at the IHSA Belvidere North Regional Jan. 13.
Humphrey finished with the third best Huntley points total in Kishwaukee River Conference-Fox Valley Conference with 104 and his best game has been a 286.
Humphrey answered steam leader questions.
Describe your start in bowling and mentors who helped you learn the sport?
Humphrey: “I started in a youth league and Eric DeBello, the current girls coach, was coaching there. He taught me the basics and helped me develop my skills and technique. Once I got to the high school team Coach Jacob Wagner and Jason Waters helped refine and tune my abilities.”
How did you prepare for this season after last season’s end at state?
Humphrey: “I did a lot of thinking, spare shooting and target practice.”
What are the aspects of this team that are the most enjoyable?
Humphrey: “Just being able to do something I love almost everyday.”
As juniors, how do you assist the many younger bowlers develop?
Humphrey: “We try to help in the ways we can. I like to take what they already know up a level.”
What is your mental prep as you prepare before rolling or at practice?
Humphrey: “Not much. I just listen to a lot of ‘Green Day’.”
Thoughts on the great sportsmanship among teams, how big is that in bowling?
Humphrey: “I value respect a lot and just making conversation with other teams goes a long way.”
With the regional fast approaching, what are team and individual goals?
Humphrey: “I haven’t really thought of individual goals but as a team we want to make it to top three in the state competition.”
Other sports you participated in as a youngster?
Humphrey: “I used to play baseball.”
College or pro bowlers you admire?
Humphrey: “I really liked watching Pete Weber highlights because he is a really funny guy and E.J. Tackett because it’s cool seeing a one handed bowler get so many revs on a ball.”
