Girls basketball trophy stays put at HHS
The short bus ride from Prairie Ridge High School in Crystal Lake to Huntley was a pleasant one for the Red Raiders girls basketball team.
Huntley celebrated winning the Fox Valley Conference championship trophy after beating Prairie Ridge 47-27. With one league game left, Huntley improved to 16-1, 22-6 overall record. The achievement was the third straight league crown for Huntley.
“I am extremely proud of the girls’ effort tonight. We wanted to win the FVC outright and we did it,” Huntley coach Steve Raethz said. “We were very efficient on offense and were able to extend the lead in the second half.”
Junior Anna Campanelli poured in 17 points to lead the way and Aubrina Adamik added eight while Ava McFadden tallied six points, but had the most important hoop, a trey that increased the Huntley lead from eight to 11 points early in the fourth quarter. That sent the Red Raiders to a 15-3 run to finish the game.
Huntley excelled in three-point baskets, making seven. Campanelli made two as did Aubrina Adamik, who tallied 10 points; McFadden scored two treys of her eight points and Madison Diaz had one trey of her four points.
“McFadden has had a good second half this season of shooting, but that is what we’ve been able to do, with different players stepping up at different times,” Raethz said.
“My teammates do a good job of finding the open person,” McFadden said. “We do a lot of shooting drills in practice.”
“We came out with a lot of energy,” Campanelli said. “It’s super exciting to win conference.”
The win, Huntley’s seventh straight, came one contest from the regular season finale at Dundee-Crown Feb. 9.
The Red Raiders begin IHSA Class 4A Regional play at Rockford Guilford against the McHenry-Jacobs winner at 6 p.m. Feb. 12. The winners of the first round clash for the regional final at Guilford Feb. 15 as part of the McHenry Sectional.
