Defending track champs set for solid season
HUNTLEY — With the indoor meet season in the books, it is time to begin the outdoor meets for the Huntley girls track and field team.
Prior to the start of the outdoor season, Huntley seniors Sophie Amin selected University of South Dakota and Vicky Evitmov picked the University of South Dakota, both D-1 schools, for 2024-25.
The Red Raiders traveled to Crystal Lake South and won a quad meet April 8. HHS had 80 points and beat McHenry, Cary-Grove and Crystal Lake South.
“The FVC meets are a great opportunity to get in some additional race reps and put some kids in different events,” Huntley coach Jason Monson said. “It’s also a great opportunity to see some kids race that don’t typically get to compete at larger invites. With a team of 80 plus runners, it’s great to see our depth on display at these events.”
The Red Raiders opened outdoor meets at Springfield Southeast April 6 and Monson was pleased with the results.
“It’s not the most competitive meet we participate in, but it’s a great opportunity to simulate the state meet with the overnight and having to travel and wake up ready to compete. Our girls had some great performances after taking off spring break, so it was nice to see,” Monson said.
Champions and highlights included: freshman Morgan Sauber won the 800-meter run, 2:25.71 time and Aspen Maldonado was second with a time of 2:29.96. In the 1,600-meters, freshman Haley Rahman was victorious, 11:30.14 and sophomore Gabrielle Sweeney ran third, 12:48.72.
For relays, the 4×100-meter squad of Evtimov, Amin, K’Leigh Saenz and Dominique Johnson took home first place, 48.52 seconds. Also, the 4×800-meter quartet of Cori Klivinger, Maldonado, Mackenzie Billard and Isabella Ciesla won in 10:34.36.
For field events, junior Sienna Robertson won the discus, 37.13 meters; junior Dominique Johnson won both the long jump, 5.31 meters and triple jump, 11.83 meters and soph Emma Garofalo took second in the pole vault, 2.60 meters.
Top Times meet
Huntley girls track and field team wrapped up the indoor portion of the season at the Illinois Top Times meet at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington March 23. Highlights included a triple jump championship from junior Dominique Johnson and she was third in the long jump.
“Overall, we were very pleased with our performances at Top Times,” Monson said. “For the first time since I can remember, all of our athletes who qualified went home with a medal. The Top Times meet is a nice cap on the indoor season and allows us to reset and refocus our goals for the outdoor season. Incredibly happy for Johnson, who defended her triple jump championship with her third consecutive indoor championship.”
Johnson’s efforts were 12.22 meters for the triple jump and 5.72 meters in the long jump.
Also for Huntley, Amin was runner-up in the 60m hurdles, 8.93 seconds. The 4×800 relay set a best time of 9:36.72 with Klivinger, Maldonado, Rahman and Morgan Sauber combining.
Monson was happy with the indoor season as the Red Raiders prepare for defense of their outdoor IHSA Class 3A team championship.
“The indoor season overall was very successful,” Monson said. “We put up a lot of great performances that will help set the stage for outdoors, when this truly matters. The indoor season is mostly about racing and competing, while also putting in a lot of work training and in the weight room. As we move outdoors, we will begin to solidify some things and approach the outdoor season with the goal of reaching the podium again in May.”
