Evtimov to take track skills north
HUNTLEY — Vicky Evtimov has achieved nine state track and field meet qualifications and has been part of three IHSA Class 3A State Championships in her four-year career, which will continue in college.
Evtimov has a commitment to attend Division I University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for 2024-25, where she will continue her track and field journey.
HHS girls track and field head coach Jason Monson commented about her college selection.
“I’m super excited about Evtimov’s choice to run at UW-M, especially since it is close and we might get to go watch her run throughout her career,” Monson said. “Evtimov is going to do so many great things there, much the same as she has done here. Her team first approach is something any college will appreciate.”
Evtimov, who will major in Biomedical Sciences on the Pre-Med track at UW-M, reflected on her track and field career.
Which track and field events have you participated in at HHS?
Evtimov: “I’ve taken part in all sprint events, ranging from the 100 to the 400-meter runs. Additionally, I compete in all three sprint relays along with their corresponding individual events.”
How did you decide to start in track and field? Other sports you have played?
Evtimov: “I began participating in track and field during my sixth grade year because of my speed on the soccer field. Prior to middle school, I was involved in both soccer and figure skating. However, in sixth grade I made the decision to devote all of my attention to track and field.”
Favorite memories from last year’s state title experience?
Evtimov: “One of my favorite memories occurred when our entire team gathered on the bleachers behind the long jump pit (at Eastern Illinois University), eagerly waiting the 1,600-meter race. Following that event, we came to the realization that our collective efforts had secured us a State Title. It was a moment filled with years of dedication and sacrifices. This moment was so important because it brought our hard working team together, allowing us to celebrate as a team.”
Describe the recruitment process and how you chose UW-M? Events next year?
Evtimov: “My journey of being recruited started during the summer, scheduling dozens of calls from college coaches. I filled my days scheduling calls and Zoom meetings with coaches. Eventually, I narrowed down my choices to four or five colleges and went on visits. I ultimately decided on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for several reasons. I felt a strong connection with head coach Andy Hatch, and the team made me feel incredibly welcomed and at ease. Another significant factor was the distance from home, UW-M is about a two-hour drive away. Next year, I’ll be continuing my sprint journey, just like I did in high school.”
Main goals for yourself and the team this season?
Evtimov: “Personally, my goal is to run the 200-meters in under 25 seconds this year and earn a podium finish at the State Meet. Also, run a low 12 seconds in the 100-meter run. Additionally, I aim to achieve podium finishes in the relays we compete in at EIU. As a team, our objective is to place to-three in the IHSA State Class 3A meet this year.”
Do you have a day-of-meet routine and what it is?
Evtimov: “On meet days, K’Leigh Saenz always braids my hair, she is my girl. I prioritize stretching, RPR and warm-ups. Before my events, I make sure to fully stretch and continue to complete my RPR routine. Following that, I go through my warm-up routine before competing. God holds immense importance in my life. Before I step onto the track to run, I always take a moment to pray and make the sign of the cross at the starting blocks.”
Who is the most likely to make the mood light at practice?
Evtimov: “We maintain a consistently positive attitude during practice, but if I were to single out someone, it would be Sophie Amin. Her bubbly personality has the ability to lift anyone’s spirits. Even during challenging workouts, she is there, cheering and bringing positivity to the team. Amin’s dedication to training is admirable, and she is not just an exceptional athlete but also is an incredible person.”
