Ferrara, Stone gain career milestones
HUNTLEY — Two Huntley girls lacrosse players gained memorable achievements in 24 hours and the Red Raiders picked up two more victories.
The dynamic duo consists of juniors Katie Ferrara and Savannah Stone. Ferrara gained her 200th career goal against Mundelein Carmel in a 13-3 HHS triumph May 4. Stone secured her 200th career save May 3 in an 18-2 Red Raiders victory over Hampshire co-op.
Ferrara, who scored four goals against Carmel, has tallied 75 goals on the season. She was ranked sixth in Illinois last week and totaled 201 goals for her career.
The Red Raiders were 12-3 overall, 5-1 in the FVC and ranked 20th.
“Ferrara and Stone are definitely leaders of this team,” Huntley coach Joe Domka said. “Ferrara definitely gets more attention because of her scoring ability.”
“It was very exciting,” Ferrara said of her 200th goal. “We’ve had a lot of good teamwork this year.”
For Stone, a switch in sports in middle school led to her lacrosse position.
“I was a catcher in softball but they needed a goalie on my eighth-grade team,” Stone said.
The match against the visiting Corsairs was 2-2 after one quarter with CHS’ best player, Mia Cordova, scoring both of the visitor’s goals. Mya Holmberg and Ferrara, who both finished with four goals, tallied the early HHS goals, then Ally Schneider scored a goal, the first of her three scores. Mya Holmberg and Leah Holmberg all scored goals for a 5-2 lead. Lauren Cardenal added a second half goal.
Freshman Mya Holmberg, the Red Raiders second leading scorer with 32 goals and 49 points before the weekend matches, is teamed with sister sophomore Leah Holmberg, who had 33 goals and 54 total points.
Also a leading contributor is junior Ally Schneider. She added another goal against Carmel and five in a recent match for 27 total and 46 points. Schneider’s career goal total stood at 98 as of May 6.
The Red Raiders are ready for their second round FVC battle with undefeated in FVC Crystal Lake Central co-op, May 8 at CLC. CLC won the first round, 3-2. The match will feature two lacrosse stars, Ferrara and CLC co-op’s Anna Starr.
