Red Raiders win own sectional title
HUNTLEY — The Huntley boys track and field team will compete in seven events against the state’s best at the Class 3A IHSA State Boys Track and Field meet May 23-25 at Charleston.
The Red Raiders captured their own Class 3A Sectional crown May 16 with 100 points. Advancing to state at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium meet are: Zach Rysavy in the triple jump; Vinny Costa, 100-meter dash; Tommy Nitz, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs; Jeff Cruickshank, high jump and the 4×100- and 4×200-meter relay team of Costa, Fom Guessefi, Lex Giron and Talon Sargent.
“I was really pleased with our effort of all of ou kids at sectional, not just those who qualified for state. We competed in 32 events and had 12 seasonal bests and a lot of personal records,” Huntley coach Chris Maxedon said.
State qualifiers
Nitz edged DeKalb’s Jacob Barraza by approximately two seconds to win the 1,600-meter run. The win gave Nitz two sectional victories – he also took the 3,200-meter run.
A few minutes after Nitz’s second win, the Red Raiders passed around the Class 3A Huntley Boys Track and Field Sectional plaque. The hosts tallied 100 points to beat second-place DeKalb and Belvidere North’s 77 points.
Nitz ran a 4:16.59 in the 1,600-meters, after winning the 3,200-meters with a 9:12.10, again topping Barraza.
“I think the 1,600-meter run was a lot more fun because it was more competitive. Barraza is an excellent runner,” Nitz said.
The double wins means Nitz may have a choice next week at EIU.
“I’ll look at the entries and decide which is the best race. I’m leaning to the 1,600-meters now, but I might do both,” Nitz said.
The relay contingent of Costa, Giuseffi, Giron and Sargent made state in both the 4×100 with a title at 41.06 seconds and a runner-up to DeKalb in the 4×200-meter relay, with a 1:28.01 effort.
Sargent had to overcome injuries to run the anchor leg.
“If you’re fast, you’re fast. You may not be in the best shape due to the injuries and we held him to just the relays. He bought into it. In the 100, he extended the lead,” Maxedon said.
Another victory for the Red Raiders came from Schroeder, a senior, in the 300-hurdles run.
“I am so proud of Schroeder he has done so much for our program over the last four years. I’m real excited to see he is going to state,” Maxedon said.
Schroeder won the Fox Valley Conference 300 hurdles and kept that momentum going until a bid to Charleston.
“I just kept pushing myself,” Schroeder said. He is also assisting younger brother Matt learn hurdles.
Rysavy earned a second place in the triple jump.
“It feels great,” Rysavy said. “I’ve been working for this for two years. I missed by two centimeters last year. I came in with a chip on my shoulder and didn’t mess around with any scratch jumps.”
Costa, a junior, qualified in the 100-meter run with a fourth-place 10.95 seconds effort. He was third in the 200-meters, 22.11.
Cruickshank, a senior, took fourth in the high jump with a 1.90 meters (6-2.75) effort to move on to state.
