Boys lacrosse advances to sectional final
HUNTLEY — A chance at a third sectional title was what the Huntley boys lacrosse team sought and achieved May 22 against St. Charles East.
HHS outlasted St. Charles East 17-9 in the semifinals of its own IHSA Sectional. This victory followed a 14-5 win over St. Charles North in the first sectional match. HHS’s sectional final is May 24, with the top seeded Red Raiders and third seed Neuqua Valley seeking a spot in the Streamwood super-sectional on May 28.
“It’s what we all strive for, for one more match for the team,” Huntley coach Dominic Saccomanno said. “Bobby Pupich took over the game, and we played a more mature offense in the second half, not just in the transition.”
Huntley’s leading scorer Pupich contributed seven goals against the East Saints but had plenty of help as the Red Raiders improved to a 17-5 record. After a 10-7 halftime lead, Huntley dominated the second half, 7-2. SJ Engmann added three goals, Cole Copersmet had two, while Gabe De La Pez and Andrews added one score.
“We prepped real hard for this one. I felt SJ Engmann stepped up well as did Nico Andrews. We were able to split the defense and we have a number of straight shooters,” Pupich said.
The Saints were an 11-4 team and proved to be no easy win.
Victory over St. Charles North
Pupich, the team’s leading scorer, had four goals as did sophomore Engmann. One goal scorers were: Collin Abordo, Dominic Scarpelli, Alex Cunningham, Cameron Abordo, Andrews and Ryan Baumley. Goalie Collin McDougall made 12 saves.
Pupich entered the match with 36 goals, 44 assists for 117 points. He is a veteran lacrosse player and has a routine before each match.
“I usually have a sandwich at Subway, then if it’s a home match, work on my shots,” Pupich said.
Engmann, also a long-time lacrosse player, said he has worked on his skills since the season started. He entered the match with 38 goals.
“I have more stamina now than I did early in the season,” Engmann said.
The top two scorers earned praise from the Huntley head coach.
“Pupich and Engmann picked it up since Andrews was injured,” Saccomanno said.
The underdog Stars, a five-win team, shocked Huntley with its early scoring chances, including a 1-0 lead. But Engmann’s first goal gained a tie and Pupich’s initial score made it 2-1 and Huntley was on its way. Alex Cunningham, Collin Abordo, Ryan Baumley, Dom Scarpelli, Andrews and Nick Tobin added goals. McDougall made 10 saves in goal.
