Youth baseball squads do well at MCYSA
HUNTLEY — For one Huntley team, a thrilling win meant the conclusion of the season with a McHenry County Youth Sports Association Summer International Championships crown. For another, it battled to a runner-up finish in its division.
The Huntley-based 8U Illinois Citius team captured its title over Signature Stars, in a 12-11 thriller July 14. The Stars had downed Cirius 11-10 the day before. The winners emerged on top after a three-game day.
The next day, the Raiders Baseball Academy took the field. After a thrilling 6-5 win over the Cardinals of Arlington, RBA beat the Lake County Lightning, 17-7, but fell to Halos Midwest, 15-5, in the championhip clash, for a 4-2 overall record.
“We have a lot to be proud of our effort at the tournament,” RBA Coach Steve Shower said. “We had an exciting comeback win over a good Arlington team, as we were down 5-4 but scored two runs in the eighth inning.”
“We look forward to the tournament every year to end the season,” Shower said.
RBA topped its victory total by one with 40 this season. Team members will go on to play high school ball at many Fox Valley Conference schools.
“We have kids going to play at Huntley, Jacobs, Hampshire and Crystal Lake Central in the FVC as well as Streanwood. It will be fun to follow them,” Shower said.
One interesting angle of the tournament took place in the 11U division. Two Phenom teams, both based in Crystal Lake, squared off in bracket play. The Germberia team, acutally a younger 10U squad, won, 12-0, before falling in the championship to Signature Stars.
International flavor
The 31st Annual MCYSA International Championships were just underway.
“Baseball is the international language,” Dan Malone, MCYSA Executive Director, commented. “Players can come here and see a wide variety of baseball styles, from small ball to more aggressive.”
Malone and MCYSA officials are thrilled with the tournament reaching 100 teams.
Meanwhile, local homestay parents said they liked having Brazil, Japanese and Puerto Rican players stay with them.
“We had one player stay with us last year and we liked it so much we’re having two stay with us this year,” said Kevin Leyden of Crystal Lake.
Shauna Crebill coordinates the homestay program for MCYSA and her family was honored at the opening ceremony Crystal Lake’s Lippold Park.
“We’ve had homestay since 2014 and it’s grown every year,” Crebil, of Woodstock, said.
The Crystal Lake Central Class 3A State Champions were honored at the second sessoion opening ceremony July 18. The second session included powerhouse Japan 15U squad.
