Fire fighters prevail over police in softball
HUNTLEY — Damp fall-like conditions in early August did not slow enthusiasm for the Huntley Police and Huntley Fire Protection District (HFPD) softball game.
Community spirit was the winner overall while the fire fighters won the contest 7-5 at the Veterans Memorial Park diamond in Sun City Aug. 6. The 22nd annual softball game was part of Huntley’s National Night Out Day and Enjoy Huntley Week activities.
The game had the visiting police department members take an early lead, but first baseman of the HFPD, Keith Schroeder, had the big hit with a three-run double in the HFPD win. Schroeder was a double-winner this day, with the title in the Culver’s custard eating contest as well.
“It’s nice to make the community connection, and was fun to win the game for the first time in a couple of years,” HFPD Fire Chief Scott Ravagnie said.
The two departments, after words of thanks for their service, and a nod to Sun City and Village of Huntley officials, gathered for a group photo, before Ravagnie and new police chief Linda Hooten did the annual first pitch tosses for home field status.
The afternoon began with four Sun City Marine Corps Color Guard members – Bob Krukowski, Tom Culumber, Chuck Moran and Joe Scora, doing the honors. Fred Jacob sang the National Anthem.
“We have been presenting colors for 15 years,” Scora said. “We do a lot of events in Sun City, such as the golf cart parade, and events at Marlowe Middle School. We’re glad to do it.”
