Brat fest puts spotlight on Lions Club
HUNTLEY — The Huntley Area Lions Club has been serving the area for 20 years on a variety of causes, and the community helped out by supporting the club’s Brat and Beer Fest on Aug. 3.
The event at Sew Hop’D Brewery and Taproom raised funds for sight and hearing needs. The fun included a show from the Huntley High School Jazz Band and a Culver’s custard eating contest. Co-chairs for the event were Lions Pam White and Pam Palmer.
“The Lions Club International covers a lot of humanitarian needs,” White said. “These include hearing, vision, youth, pediatric cancer and humanitarian relief, the environment.”
Palmer serves as a zone chairperson for Fox River Lions Clubs, a 55-club area.
The Brat and Brew event chairpersons praised HHS students from the football team and NHS for their assistance in set-up and take down work Saturday.
The club presented three HHS Class of 2024 members with scholarships. They are Emma Swiersz, Zachary Rogers and Christina Smith.
Ron Bruns of Sun City is the new Lions Club President.
“I have been a Lion for three years. So far, I’m pleased with the turnout. Our club does a lot for the community, and we have about 48 members,” Bruns said.
New Lions Club Secretary Karri Freeman also has been a club member for three years.
“I met them at the (Huntley Area Chamber of Commerce) Expo and inquired about what they do for the community. Palmer then invited me to a dinner meeting.”
The local history of the Lions Club was that it was started in March, 2021, as the Lions Club of Sun City. In 2018, its name was changed to Huntley Area Lions Club, “to better reflect our area of service. Through the Huntley Area Lions Club’s fundraising and the generosity of others, we help locally and beyond with sight and hearing needs and other global causes supported by Lions Club International. A total of 100 percent of what is raised goes back to the community.
Lions of Illinois Foundation also helps several causes, including: mobile retinal screening unit; recycling of eyeglasses, hearing aids, keys, cell phones and aluminum tabs; social services and referrals and health fairs as well as Camp Lions for children and adults.
