Cary Police Department reports multiple vehicle burglaries and stolen vehicle incidents
CARY — According to a press release statement by the village’s police department, in the early morning hours of Aug. 11, approximately ten vehicle burglaries and one car theft occurred in the area encompassed by First Street on the east to Silver Lake Road on the west, and Three Oaks Road on the north and Park Avenue on the south.
Officers from the Cary Police Department were first alerted to these incidents occurring at approximately 5:30 a.m. when a resident in the 300 block of Oriole Trail called to report that at approximately 4:48 a.m., a subject tried to open the doors to their vehicle that was parked in their driveway.
Police stated that the incident was captured by the resident’s home security camera. It was then reported that over the next several hours, officers were alerted to multiple additional occurrences of items stolen from vehicles in the same general area.
Cary Police Department Deputy Chief Scott Naydenoff said that the items stolen from residents included purses, money, debit cards, and credit cards. In one instance, two handguns were also taken from a resident’s car. In most cases, the cars that were burglarized were left unlocked, stated Naydenoff. In another vehicle burglary, the offender used a flashlight to illuminate the interior of the vehicle, and upon seeing an item of value, the suspect broke the car’s window with an unknown object to gain entry.
Later in the morning, a neighboring agency was called to a report of an abandoned vehicle on the side of the roadway in their jurisdiction. That vehicle was traced back to a Cary resident who did not know that their car had been stolen earlier in the morning.
It was added that the vehicle appeared to have been stolen during the general time frame of the burglary incidents, and was believed to have been used to perpetrate the burglaries before being abandoned by the offenders.
Officers later learned the offenders, who appeared to be traveling in three different vehicles, were also using a vehicle stolen out of a neighboring jurisdiction to travel through the neighborhoods.
A victim’s stolen debit card was attempted to be used at a gas station on Fullerton Avenue in Chicago later that same morning.
Authorities described the group of suspects as consisting of at least five individuals who appeared to be either young adult or juvenile black males. Several of the suspects concealed their identities by covering their faces, however, one suspect did not hide their face.
Currently, no individuals are in custody for the vehicle burglaries. The three incidents remain under investigation by the Cary Police Department. Anyone with information, including but not limited to doorbell or security video footage in the area where the incidents occurred, is asked to contact the Cary Police Department Investigations Section at 847-639-2341.
