Boys soccer set to contend in FVC
HUNTLEY — The Huntley boys soccer team has experienced mixed results in its first six matches as the Red Raiders were 2-2-2.
The Red Raiders gained a 5-1 triumph over Woodstock North at the Red Raiders quad Sept. 7. Senior captain Mason Leslie led the way with two goals.
“The win should help a lot with our confidence and build on it,” Leslie said.
Leslie scored the third goal of the first half and added a second on an unusual shot in the second half. “I was surprised it went in,” Leslie said.
“We needed so see some good production on offense. With a 3-0 lead at halftime, it was a little cushion and we could work on some things,” Huntley coach Matt Lewandowski said.
Also contributing included senior forward Tyler Caddick with one goal and one assist. Junior forward Aktai Mametjanov and senior Anthony Frelas also tallied goals. Mathieu Tschoutan and Allen Williams each added an assist.
Leslie is one of three captains on the varsity, as senior Aidan Herrara and junior Dajven Trivedi are also captains.
Leslie has been playing soccer since his tot years but not always at midfield.
“I have been playing soccer since I was 4-or 5-year sold. I played defense at first before switching to midfield at age 10 or 11,” Leslie said.
Leslie plays soccer year round, for the Rockford FC team after prep season.
Also at the Huntley quad, the Red Raiders tied Elgin Larkin 1-1 as Mametjanov scored the goal and Reynolds had four saves. Rockford East beat the Red Raiders 2-0.
The first win by Huntley was a 1-0 verdict over South Elgin here Aug. 31. Frelas scored the goal from an assist by Williams.
The Red Raiders took on eighth-ranked Rolling Meadows in non-conference action Sept. 3 but fell 2-1.
Season outlook
Following a strong regional title winning season last season, a largely new team takes the pitch this fall. The Red Raiders were 16-6-1 (8-1 FVC – tied for first with eventual Class 3A Champ Crystal Lake South), won a regional title at home and then lost in the sectional semi to Elgin.
Two team leaders this year are senior midfielder Leslie, (one goal, four assists last season); Connell, (2g, 3a); Williams, (1g, 1a) and junior defender Noah Gomez.
Top newcomers for the year are: junior midfielder Aiden Felz; Caddick, senior forward Frelas and sophomore forward Tyler Murray.
Lewandowski, in his sixth season, offered some comments on the new season.
“With 14 newcomers, we have a lot of work to do to get everyone on the same page and find out what we’re capable of. We will depend on the leadership and experience from our returners, who will form the backbone of our defense. We’re looking to use our depth to be a hardworking group willing to do what it takes to get the job done and compete within the FVC and win another regional championship,” Lewandowski said.
Huntley will host Rockford Jefferson Sept. 11.
