Classic car owners enjoy Huntley show
HUNTLEY β A sun-splashed mid-September Saturday afternoon beckoned area classic car owners to come to Huntley as another show season’s end nears.
Freemasons of Illinois’ McHenry County members organized the car show at Sew Hop’D Brewery and Tap Room’s parking lot in Huntley. A total of 99 vehicles were on display Sept. 14.
“I helped co-found the car show, and we also have one in the spring in Cary,” Freemason car show organizer Matthew Smok of Crystal Lake said. “Funds go to support the four or five scholarships we award each year.”
Years of the cars dated from the early 1930s, and a 1933 Ford owner won best of show.
Paul Munn of Lake in the Hills has owned his 1965 Bonneville for decades.
“I work mostly on it by myself with the help of a few friends,β he said. βIt is like the one I had in high school when my wife and I were sweethearts on the north side of Chicago. I just put a new motor in and next year I’ll put in a new transmission. I call it a luxury hot rod. The 1965 and 1966 models were built the same. It’s hard to find parts for them.”
Mike Wadman of Huntley and his dad Tim both had cars in the show. Mike’s vehicle is a 1941 Dodge while Tim has a 1948 Plymouth.
“I like the fat fenders,” Mike said, and his dad agreed. Mike won a class trophy at the conclusion of the event. He plans to go to a Springfield Route 66 car show soon to end the season in a couple of weeks.
John Sobie of Hampshire also won for his class, which was a two-tone Mercuty.
Ricardo Maton of Chicago displayed his Chicago Cubs themed Jeep Wrangler.
“I bought it when we won the World Series in 2016,” Maton said.
