
MCC volleyball success continues to spike
HUNTLEY — It’s been a good stretch for McHenry County College’s women’s volleyball team.
The Scots continued to rise in NJCAA Division II ranking to 13th and the Scots outlasted a key Skyway Conference foe.
The Scots include Huntley resident Amanda Schaffer, one of the team’s setters and Huntley alumna Emily Willis, an outside hitter. MCC, 22-2 overall, 6-0 Skyway Conference, edged Skyway rival Moraine Valley by a 3-2 sets score. The Scots won 25-21, lost two sets, 25-23 and 25-21 but bounced back with 25-22, 18-16 victories Oct. 4.
“Moraine Valley has a very good outside hitter, who had 90 swings against us, who had 29 kills. It was back-and-forth, But we were able to score a few points at the end,” MCC coach Kyle McCall said.
Schaffer, a Jacobs alumna, has more than 400 assists this season as one of two Scots’ main setters, had 22 against Moraine Valley. Courtney Komperda led with 29 assists. Willis contributed seven kills and 20 digs, while Annie Eschenbach led the net play with 24 kills.
The Scots easily handled College of Lake County’s squad here Oct. 9. MCC won 25-6, 25-10 and 25-7. Schaffer had 21 assists and seven digs and Willis contributed nine kills and four digs.
Also for the Scots’ fall sports teams:
MCC’s women’s tennis team, which includes Huntley alums Elaina Hibbeler and Ashley Phommasack, were 6-1 Skyway after a tough 5-4 win over Elgin.
“Hibbeler got the key win for us at No. 1 singles,” MCC coach Jim Stockwell said.
Next up was the NJCAA Division II Region IV post-season at Sauk Valley.
Hibbeler is tied for the region’s top No. 1 singles record at 6-1. Izzy Rodrique is 7-0 at No. 2 singles. Hibbeler and Rodriquez are undefeated at No. 1 doubles, and Phommasack has a 5-2 mark at No.4 singles.
